I've just been doing it the way you originally mentioned, i.e. a different setup
for each dial in. I write a little script that sets up my resolv.conf file
(like copy resolv.isp to resolv.conf), sets my host name, and then fires up the
appropriate ppp session. I haven't had any reliability problems with it, and it
works fine with both command line and X windows.
