Did you configure and test your serial port for shell logins first?  See
the Serial-HOWTO.  Note that COM2 = /dev/ttyS1 in Linux (ignore references
to /dev/cua devices; they are deprecated).  Again, I highly recommend
installing and configuring mgetty on your modem line.  The mgetty RPM is
included with RH5.1.  Make sure that no other devices are using the same
IRQ (take a look at /proc/interrupts).  Under DOS/Windows, sharing COM1/3
and COM2/4 IRQs is accepted practice, but not under Linux. 

Only after you can dial into your linux box with a terminal program
(Hyperterm, Procomm, Telix, whatever) and login at the shell should you
proceed to PPP configuration.
