hi,

i'm building a little LAN here in my house.
my linux connects the ISP via ppp0;
i sticked a 3Com in my linux and got a eth0.
now a want connect my Win95 with linux via eth0.
the hell is that i'm not having success in assign a IP number to my eth0
device. as my plan is (in a short term) turn my linux box into a proxy, i
decided choose a 192.168.9.xxx number for my eth0 device.

but in doing that i've got this:

yocul:~# ifconfig eth0 192.168.2.0
general protection fault: 0000
CPU:    0
EIP:    0010:[<001390bc>]
EFLAGS: 00010286

the weirdo is that the bcast and mask addresses worked in my rc.inet1:

yocul:~# ifconfig eth0
eth0      Link encap:10Mbps Ethernet HWaddr 00:20:A9:B5:2F
          inet addr:0.0.0.0 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

why is it happening?
