General protection fault on Linux?? Amazing.

I just tried the same command on a Linux box (2.0.36 kernel,
libc5, ifconfig from Red Hat net-tools-1.32.alpha-2).
Worked OK.

You might check to see if your 3com drivers are up-to-date;
if you're running a recent 3c900 or 3c905 they are not up-to-date,
unless you've already replaced the drivers in the kernel with
recent ones.

Look in /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/3c95x.c for a URL.

Look also for IRQ or I/O address conflicts.

If you're running a 3c501, dispose of it appropriately:
in a landfill. Don't incinerate it.
