Then you are running pppd 2.3.5 with kernel ppp 2.2.0.

I've had pretty good luck running this combination, (though I
am not any more) but others have reported difficulties.

There are two defects in ppp-2.3.5/linux/ppp.c which have been
discussed to death on this list.  But alas, the maintainers,
if any, have not seen fit to post ppp-2.3.5p1 containing the
extremely trivial fixes.
