There has been a little bit of talk on this list about problems in PPP 2.3.5
with the new 2.2.0 kernel. However, I haven't seen any specific details. Could
someone please post a quick note on the steps needed to update PPP for the new
kernel? (For instance, when compiling PPP under the new 2.2.0 kernel, should the
"make kernel" step be skipped?)

I'm asking this because I've managed to totally kill PPP on my Linux box. I had
been running kernel 2.0.33 (upgraded from a RedHat 5.0 system) with PPP 2.2.0f
on my ISDN line without any trouble for several months. Then, when I heard that
the upcoming 2.2.0 kernel needed PPP 2.3.5, I tried to upgrade to 2.3.5. It
didn't work, but I just assumed that PPP 2.3.5 needed features in the newer
kernel, so I went back to PPP 2.2.0f.

But then, when the new 2.2.0 kernel was released, I installed it and
subsequently upgraded to PPP 2.3.5. Still no luck. I've tried changing my
/etc/ppp/options file, adding the ppp-compress-xx aliases in /etc/conf.modules,
and even recompiling the PPP package, but nothing works. I can't even get the
ppp0 device to come up when running "ifconfig" with no parameters.

If anyone would care to take a look at my configuration files and syslog output,
I'd be happy to post them. Otherwise, I'd appreciate any tips on upgrading to
PPP 2.3.5 with the new Linux kernel. Thanks,

Trevor
