I just skimmed this thread.  This might not be acceptable to you, but you
can use AutoPPP with the 'pap' and -> 'login' <- options to put the actual
user account names in the log.  From 'last' on my dial-in system: 

ggoodrum ttyR1                         Wed Mar  3 22:52 - 23:34  (00:41)
a_ppp    ttyR1        115200           Wed Mar  3 22:52 - 22:52  (00:00)
ggoodrum ttyR1                         Wed Mar  3 20:35 - 21:44  (01:08)
a_ppp    ttyR1        115200           Wed Mar  3 20:35 - 20:35  (00:00)

Of course, this requires a user account for each PPP user, but it sounds
as if this is the case here, anyway.  If you don't want to allow users to
shell in, you should be able to disable their shell login without
impacting PPP access.
