I am not sure if my problem was the same as yours; but I had the same severe
delay
when I used minicom to attempt to login. It would wait excessively.  What I
discovered
was that my mouse and my modem were both using interrupt 4.  If I kept my
mouse
moving when I started minicom, it would work as expected.  If I changed my
modem
to a different interrupt, it worked fine.  You can look in your
/var/log/messages file and
determine what interrupt is used for each of the com ports.
