I think I know the answer to this question, but someone might be able to
confirm this.
We have an internal network (192.168.1.0/24) and modem connections over
ppp (192.168.2.nnn assigned to each dial in line). The PC's at the end
of the modems are running Win95 and the server is Linux 2.0.35 with ppp
2.3.5. The dial in PCs would like to have the "Network Neighbourhood"
function of Win95 work so they can see the rest of the workgroup which
is on the internal network.
Have tried all sorts of combinations using IP forwarding between the two
nets without success.
1. Is the basic problem that Network Neighbourhood is using NETBUI
native and therefore I need to setup the Linux server as a bridge?
2. Or.. should I be using masquerading on the incoming ppp link because
it is a private IP address?
3. Or... am i the last person on the planet to find out that windows
networking will never work properly over a PPP link?
4. I also noticed a MS patch for tunneling using PPTP. Would that work?
5. Is there a HOWTO or mini-HOWTO on this ghastly, frequently asked
subject?
TIA
Rick Marshall
