6. *Never buy an internal modem*. Reasons: a) If it gets "confused", you
can't power it off and on again without doing the same to your computer;
b) It doesn't have a set of nice easily visible lights to tell you
exactly what's going on; c) It might be a winmodem; d) It's harder to
transfer it between machines (if you ever need to); e) Plug and play ISA
devices are a pain in the butt; f) A black box with flashing lights on
it sitting on top of your computer looks dead cool. Well, it does to
some people anyway ;)
