RedHat's canned stuff works great- you may not need a ppp otions file.
ifgCcfg-pppx (0)  AND ifup-ppp  should be enough.  you can specify default
route as an option in ifcfg-ppp or ifup-ppp 
(/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts)

on your modem-settings try ATZ. Unless factory config has been changed
this usually works with most modems. (hope you have a real modem w/ a UART
 
I suspect the answer has little to do with these two areas, but worth
checking ?
