I have seen this in several of my boxes with IDE disks. The problem
has always been that, by default, Linux disables serial port
interrupts while writing/reading to IDE disks. Use the hdparm utility
to tell Linux to not disable serial port interrupts while accesing the
disk and see if that helps.
