I have "hdparm -u1 /dev/hd[abc]"  running in rc.local.  I likewise use
irqtune to give ttyS1 (ppp port) highest interrupt priority.  Connections are
fast, except when running Vmware when I always experience 50%+ packet loss.
Any other takers???
