Agreed, the peer isn't getting the messages sent by pppd, or is getting
them in a scrambled form.

What else has changed besides the kernel version and pppd version? Do you
use the same chat and pppd scripts? Do the boot-up files configure the
device file the same way: does "setserial /dev/ttyS2" show the same
attributes with the possible exception of, say, spd_vhi? A misconfigured
UART can cause this sort of thing, e.g. 16550 rather than 16550A configured
for a 16550A UART. Is the same modem used and are the modem's internal
profile settings the same?
I'm using kernel 2.2.9 and ppp-2..3.8 without any problem.
