The solution to your problem is (as Clifford Kite has also mentioned)...

/sbin/setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A

Try it even if you think it probably won't work. As you probably know, whack
that in the appropriate init script for it to be set automatically.

If that doesn't work, that I will personally go out into the nearest sewer
and eat the biggest, ugliest rat I can find. So I hope it works....

PS. I had a similar, but not exact problem. I think I actually started
Clifford on his UART crusade :-) At least I might have helped a few people
with it. I also don't have your original message, as I purged it some time ago
