Why not???  You won't get far using pppd if you can't open the serial
port. :-)

At the moment pppd needs to be able to open a /dev/ptypx & /dev/ttypx
pair.  If having unix98 ptys stops you from doing that, you're out of
luck until I can implement the unix98 changes to pppd.
