This site has a compatability table. Apparently, the USR 1787-00 is Linux
compatible.
Serial ports and modems can be tricky. Have you tried using minicom to
access the modem? You may need to alter the permissions on the
appropriate /dev/ttyS<x> file. You might also check to make sure that you
give the modem a unique IRQ. Unlike Windows, Linux does not like to share
serial/modem IRQs.
