Before you pursue this too far, check whether your modem is a real modem or
an HSP modem (aka "Winmodem"). Unfortunately, the standard reference on this
question (http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/19990613a.html) doesn't list a USR
modem 1787-00 -- but it does list models 1750 (HSP), 1783 (HSP), and 1785
(real modem).

Whatever the outcome, you might want to report your results to the Winmodem
site (http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html).
