Hi, 07.07.1999

We are having a problem using pppd and ISDN:

we are using hybrd ISDN adapters (external modems that can accept both analog
and ISDN calls and forward them to the server through a serial line) for
incoming ppp calls. While we don't have problems with incoming ppp over analog
lines (V.34, V90 etc), there are errors when incoming calls come via ISDN/HDLC.
Enclosed is a logfile from Linux/X.11/KDE/kppp:

Jul 7 05:53:56 locutus pppd[1115]: pppd 2.2.0 started by thommie, uid 500
Jul 7 05:53:56 locutus pppd[1115]: Using interface ppp0
Jul  7 05:53:56 locutus pppd[1115]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
Jul 7 05:53:56 locutus pppd[1115]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <mru 1500> <magic

Jul 7 05:54:26 locutus pppd[1115]: Terminating on signal 15.
Jul 7 05:54:26 locutus pppd[1115]: sent [LCP TermReq id=0x2]
Jul 7 05:54:29 locutus pppd[1115]: sent [LCP TermReq id=0x3]
Jul 7 05:54:32 locutus pppd[1115]: Connection terminated.
Jul 7 05:54:32 locutus pppd[1115]: Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Jul 7 05:54:32 locutus pppd[1115]: Problem: nothing was received
Jul 7 05:54:32 locutus pppd[1115]: Exit.
PPP-logfile line 1/11 (END)

The Server uses kernel 2.2.10 and pppd 2.3.5, whereas the client calls in with
pppd 2.2.0 and kernel 2.0.36.

We assume that the message "Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:", which
ONLY occurs in ISDN sessions, means that data are not transferred correctly
from the ISDN modem to the serial line and vice versa. This would indicate a
wrong initialisation of the modem (ELSA Microlink ISDN/V.34).

Anyone here who can give us a hint about where to look and for what?

Thanks!
MfG
