No. This shouldn't make a difference as long as you have always used
full names when trying to ping.

I already wrote in my previous mail that /etc/host.conf should contain
`order hosts, bind' or similar. If `bind' is missing the nameservers
won't be queried.
Have you tried pinging these servers ? They don't HAVE to respond but if
they do it would be a good sign.
