Pardon my cutting in. I believe your previous post said your modem was on
IRQ 5. If so, you have a conflict with the soundcard as Clifford
suggested. Soundblaster compatible cards frequently want IRQ 5. You might
configure your modem for IRQ 4 (presuming it isn't used by a serial mouse,
etc.).
