Paul, please run the followings and tell me if is what you want to be:

/usr/sbin/pppd-2.3.8 debug
/usr/sbin/pppd-2.3.9 debug

And see the logs.

P.S. I have in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets (*  *       ""      *).
