Here your ISP asks for the CHAP authentication

Here pppd sends the response for CHAP

Your ISP says the CHAP authentication is successful.

Here your ISP says that it doesn't like any of the available compression
methods i.e. ppdeflate and bsd-comp. Compression is not mandatory for a ppp
link.

At this stage the TCP/IP link should be up and running. Whatever has been
logged till this stage should keep pppd happy.
> Jan 18 01:10:23 madras pppd[25009]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
This looks like the other side closed the connection - ofcourse without access
to the server log it is difficult to say what it didn't like.

I am not sure but isn't this count the number of bytes sent after successfully
connecting to the server i.e. after the IP address's have been exchanged ?? If
I am correct then for less than a second you did have a functional
TCP/IP connection through which data was exchanged.
> Jan 18 01:10:24 madras pppd[25009]: Exit.

Oops I didn't notice this before - your ISP sent this
Jan 18 01:10:22 madras pppd[25041]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x0 <asyncmap 0x0>
<auth chap m$oft> <magic 0x2071> <pcomp> <accomp> < 11 04 06 4e> < 13 17 01 60

You are using the Microsoft CHAP authentication patch aren't you !!!!
