I find pppd-2.3.8-? from RedHat 6.0 works fine in that way.

I know that this is the way mgetty works with AutoPPP and that some people
want the same thing that you do, but I have no suggestions as to how it can
be done.

Robert Canary seems to have found a solution for ppp-2.3.5, and, with
sufficient C programming experience, it can probably be adapted for other
pppd versions.  I'd *guess* that it can't be done by mgetty configuration
alone and to get the utmp entries a mgetty patch is required.
