Log messages are often better than narrative but the messages should be
exact, using copy and paste.  Otherwise errors and omissions creep in; the
errors are undesirable and the omissions often significant.

I *think* that NT needs some silly text string exchange before doing PPP
with a Null modem.  Something like CLIENT from one side and CLIENTSERVER
from the other side.  I don't run NT and, since PPP is a peer-to-peer
protocol, I don't know which side should send which text string.
