on these machines which i plan to document, i will be using a sacrificial
partition to do an "everything-in-root" install. 
for the purposes of this howto- i dont want to assume the user has a big
network of machines they can run nfs on (though i do, and that is usually 
how i install.)

i will try to do it all with one machine, to simulate the most common
user's perspective.
