In Case your root partition is to be a mirror, don't do this. Instead, 

1) Do a normal install to 1st disk
2) Install raid stuff, build & install raid kernel
3) Make the 2nd disk a raid-1 (mirror) device with just one disk. 
4) copy your complete installation over to the raid device, change lilo to
boot off raid.
5) now add the installation disk to your raid device using raidhotadd.

PS: Don't forget: You'll need a small non-raid partition to hold your
kernel+/boot so lilo will work.
