You can RAID root, but /boot will have to be on a real device, as far as
I'm aware.  (Does someone know something about this that I don't?)  You
can boot from a tiny unRAIDed partition, floppy, CD, EEPROM, or anything
else bootable that's not on an md device.  Unless things have changed
recently, LILO/MILO/LoadLin simply don't understand how to get at your
kernel if it's inside an md.
