The "catch" is simply that there are (unfortuantely) two sets of s/w raid
still "out there" and while the old one I wouldn't trust with netscape
cache files, the new s/w raid is rock-solid and works great.
The *definitive* HOWTO on the subject now resides at
http://ostenfeld.dk/~jakob/Software-RAID.HOWTO/
The kernel patches and necessary newer raidtools are at:
ftp://ftp.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/raid/alpha/
For the 2.2 series of kernels, you can either use a patch from the
above directory or run an -ac (alan cox) patch since he includes the new
s/w raid support. The 2.2.11 patch can patch against 2.2.11, .12, or
.13 and the rejects form the latter two are safe to ignore. Make sure
to use whatever raidtools corresponds to the kernel and patch you use
(date stamp should match).
s/w raid for the 2.3 series of kernels is not quite ready yet.
If you have any problems, please send the /etc/raidtab you create along
with your kernel messages and command output so we can best help debug
the problem. (hopefully a section of the HOWTO covers this :)
Good luck,
James
