Just as i side note:

Write protected tapes give an

: tar: Cannot open /dev/rmt0: Read-only file system

I use only real "DDS", "Media Recognition System" tapes. My
HP35480A never saw an audio tape!

It is well known that audio tapes sometimes work on some dds 
drives and sometimes generate strange errors.
