Kermit is not included in Linux distributions because it doesn't have the
appropriate kind of license. To find out about the Kermit Project, how it
works, its license, etc, visit the Kermit website (this is always where to
find Kermit):
http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/
The latest version of C-Kermit is 7.0, which is in the final stages of Beta
testing:
http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/ck70.html
The previous version, 6.0, is pretty much nonfunctional on latter-day
Linuxes due to all the library and device changes (libc-glibc, curses-ncurses,
/dev/modem-/dev/ttyS0, etc).
The new version should be well adapted to all current distributions via a
simple "make linux". It also supports Unicode (which is being added into the
Linux console driver & xterm elsewhere).
These will be the last few weeks to give it a workout before final release
so please try it out.
