That was not the right thing to do. It is almost never necessary to
reinstall Linux, and it's certainly not needed just to get an Ethernet
card working.

?? How long have you been trying to use this system? In most distros
including RedHat, it's as simple as doing "mount /mnt/floppy" with a disk
in the drive. The floppy's files and directories will then be under
/mnt/floppy and you can work with them using normal command-line or GUI
filemanager apps. MS-DOS formatted floppies can also be accessed with the
mtools (man mtools) which removes the need to mount and umount the
floppy. All these things are discussed in the Fine Manual.

That said, you will probably have to use the DOS configuration utility on
the disk that shipped with the card to turn off Plug-N-Pray and set the
card's IRQ and I/O values to known values. The EZNET card isn't listed in
the kernel docs--what's the number on the card? The Ultra and 9192/9194
are supported for sure, so try doing:
modprobe smc9194 io=0 irq=0 (this autoprobes)
modprobe smc-ultra io=0 irq=0 (again, autoprobe)

One of those ought to work if this is indeed an SMC card and not an NE2000
clone...

This is true, without changing the config files, you cannot telnet is as
root. If you want to do this, my suggestion would be to telnet in as a
normal account then issue the "su" command and enter the root password.
This will give you the access.

Hi, when I started MkLinux from its startup screen the first time, an
error came up that said something like "please identify bootstrap.conf's
location or 'builtin'" So I typed in 'builtin' and hit return. After
that it said "Please specify name_server." What do I type in for that?

Andy Seidl

P.S. "please identify bootstrap.conf" and "Please specify name_server"
arent exactly what came up.

I had a PC Point Pro serial Mouse from Mouse Systems that I really liked --

Alas, when I installed linux I never could get it to work right -- and the
Mouse Systems web site indicated that due to some odd design it wouldn't . .

What IP is assigned to your end of the ppp connection and what name does
nslookup return for that IP? That is the only IP and name you could
receive mail directly through at this time, but would NOT work in the
private IP ranges 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x or 192.168.x.x. And that would
only work reliably if that IP was static (same every time).

216.34.13.231 is also a nameserver green.idirections.com and (future I
guess) virtual web host for www.under1sun.com and others. There is no
reverse lookup at all for that IP. Regardless of which name is used, port
25 there answers as: 220 Milk Run SMTP Server Mail ready. You could
probably send mail from there using CGI, but not receive it at that IP.

>4.) Can i set my Linux Box IP to 216.34.13.231, which is same as
>under1sun.com? and my Linux server name is "mail.under1sun.com" and can I

You cannot use that IP on your box, because it is a different box on the
internet for web hosting. You could call your box 'mail.under1sun.com' or
any other hostname.under1sun.com and still could NOT directly receive mail
there. But you could set your smtp server to masquerade as
'under1sun.com' so replies to outgoing mail would come to your POP server
at your ISP.

That is just because it is looping back through 192.168.100.50 on your
box, but that IP is not accessible from the internet.

>8.) Then if "Telnet mail.under1sun.com 110" is will prompt the following:

Like the other reply said, see 'man fetchmail'. If it is not installed,
install it, and there is a fetchmail configuration tool available. The
.fetchmailrc would be something like:

poll mail.namezero.com with proto POP3
user <user> there with password "<password>" is <user> here

Don't put < > in there, just substitute actual values.

Hi Glen,

I use a couple of SMC Ultra ISA 10M NICS here. Being in the same box, I had
to use the DOS only software to set the cards to different memory / IRQ
settings. You may have to do the same, if there is a conflict. The software
also has diagnostics - make sure that the nic actually works. If all else
fails, boot off a DOS floppy to do it, I've tried and the setup sw won't run
under dosemu.

If anyone knows how to programme these cards under Linux I'd love to know...

BTW I use the smc-ultra module, which in turn needs the 8390 mod. You'll
need a both.

Warning - if you use dd make sure that you remount the filesystem
read-only first, or else you might get an inconsistant (corrupted)
image as the partition changes while other things happen during the dd.

Yes there should. I have two swap partitions on different disks. Here

Howdy,
This is my third try at being a linux user; my previous attempts were
more of an exercise of curiosity than anything. Now, due to my need for
a serious modelling machine, I'm back.

Recently, I have downloaded .tgz compressed software from a number of
different sources. After running the following commands:

gzip -d file.tgz
tar -xvf file.tar

everything seems to decompress correctly. However, if I try to run any
of the executables by either typing out the name at the shell or using
"exec 'program'", I am told that the command is not found.

Have I done something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to access a mail server on the 192.168.1 network (on your
server)? If you are you may need to do a split DNS thing. If you are
setting up a server on the 192.168.1 network you may want to setup a DNS
Server for the internal (192.168.1) network for all the boxes on the
192.168.1 network. Because the 192.168.1 network can NOT be advertised
on the internet, you will need another DNS setup for the outside world.

If you are trying to access a pop account at an ISP, you should not have
to worry about the 192 address or setting up a DNS server.

It's a mess but once you catch on, it gets easier.

If you can give us a better discription of what you are trying to do...
i.e. Running your own Email and webserver for internal only or for both
internal and external? access ISP pop? set up you own domain???

The problem is that Windows still uses what ever it pleases for port and
irq even if a PNP capable modem is hard jumpered. I usually found that
the same settings Windows used would work in Linux with my Zoom 2819. But
I eventually just jumpered it for PNP and used isapnp.conf to set it.

PNP in CMOS setup should be disabled anyway, but I am not sure if it has
anything to do with this.

What he would need is make sure that isapnptools is installed, do a
'pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf' and then edit the resulting file to uncomment
the port and irq used. And if the irq is not a standard one for that
port, then add a setserial line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local to inform Linux what
it is.

I also have a SupraExpress 56K that has worked flawlessly with Linux and
FreeBSD. No problem connecting to a crappy Lucent (Livingston) Portmaster
that my ISP forced us to use, even though it was a problem for many
modems and never passed beta testing.

I originally bought the external because I was having trouble with a Zoom
2819 locking up so tight in any OS (including Windows), that the only way
to get it going again was to reboot. Repeated attempts to contact Zoom,
even from my ISP with complete information about the equipment on their
end to see if there were incompatibilities, went totally unanswered.
When you fill out their web form, you get an e-mail acknowledgement that
the form was received, but no answer. The lights are on, but nobody is
home.

To be fair, I don't think Lucent was ever able to get the Livingston
Portmaster to work properly and they have since ended its life cycle.
That was the only system that gave my Zoom any trouble. But I never could
figure out what the Portmaster did to my Zoom to make it lock up so tight.
