Subject: Redhat 6.1 PPP won't go...
Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2000 00:54:07 -0700

I have just installed Redhat 6.1.

I'm trying to get PPP to work. I have the connection configured, but
NETCFG will not activate it, clicking on activate changes the status,
but the modem doesn't dial.

If I type ifup ppp0 it dials and connects, but I get the following error
in the log right before it disconnects:

LCP timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection Terminated
Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean
Problem all had bit 7 set to 0
Hangup (SIGHUP)
Exit.

I have the MTU, MRU set to 1500, the timeout set to 60, and when I
connect using OS/2 I have to have VJ compression enabled but I don't see
anything like that in Linux.

Suggestions? Thank you.

Hi.

I'm using Red Hat Linux 6.2 and did a full installation.

I currently use the GNOME workstation and am trying to get onto the
Internet. I used the RH PPP dialer to dial up but the moment I get
connected to the net, the dialer seems to disconnect me and it starts
dialing again.

I've read a couple of How-Tos and I seem to have configured the dialer
correctly. Can someone please help me? Thank you.

Linux has a 1024 cylinder limit. I think your 22Gb partition is the first
partition on your disk and therefore, your linux partition is over the 1024
cylinder limit. also, you MUST create a swap partition (which I assume is
not your 5Gb partition) for linux.

Is there a way to install or query an entire package set?

For example, KDE (as a whole) is dependant on a few other packages and some
of these are within other packages.
Other than the hit-and-miss method, how can you tell where these are?
Or, is there a way to install a package as well as all its dependants?

You probably need to remove a default route to a local network.
Or add "noauth" option, but you'll probably still have to remove the
default route.

just create this device.

Have a look at:
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt

There you'll find something like that:
14 char Sound card
                  0 = /dev/mixer        Mixer control
                  1 = /dev/sequencer    Audio sequencer

and much more.

Now have a look at
man mknod

You'll get your sequencer-device after typing (as root):
mknode /dev/sequencer c 14 1

Good luck,

Martin

Subject: Linux loaded with LOADLIN: mouse works but pointer is not visible???????
Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2000 13:31:11 GMT

Problem:
when linux is loaded from Win-89 with loadlin.exe, the pointer is invisible
although the mouse works.

Details:
I run RedHat 6.1 on a Pentium III, and have recently set it up so that I
start Linux (from within Windows-98) with LOADLIN.EXE (for girlfriend
reasons).
Specifically, I've created a small .BAT file containing the loadlin command
line, and created a shortcut for this batch-file on the windows desktop.
This
works just fine except for one really weird phenomenon: after starting Linux
this way (and going into the GUI, which is KDE in my case) the mouse pointer
is invisible. However, the mouse IS working: if I click and drag on the
desktop I get a "selection rectangle" (or whatever it's called), and when I
(with some difficulty!) succeed in pointing to a shortcut on my desktop
(e.g., the one that opens a console) I can activate it by clicking. It
therefore seems that the mouse works OK except that the pointer is
invisible.

What is really weird is that I do not have the problem if I restart the
computer in MS-DOS mode and then execute the batch-file from the command
prompt. The problem does also not occur when linux is started from a
boot-disk.

The shortcut is set up to run in MS-DOS mode using "current MS-DOS
configuration". I have no DOSSTART.BAT file (so no additional programs are
run when I enter MS-DOS mode).

The batch file contains the following command line (probably irrelevant):

loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7 ro mem=128M

I've read tons of FAQs and experimented with alternative autoexec.bat and
config.sys files but nothing helps. So if anyone has a suggestion I would be
very grateful!

I would expect so. The configure script (for ncurses) has a help message:
        configure --help

> If it's not much trouble, could you walk me thru, step by step, what I need to
> do. How to find and remove wgetch from ncurses. How to compile ncurses. Do I

You remove it (wgetch) from gpm. I see that version 1.19.0 (the most recent
that I've built) has a configure option to cover this:
        configure --without-curses

I would simply reinstall gpm, e.g.,
        configure --without-curses --prefix=/usr
        make install

and then similar for ncurses:
        configure --with-gpm --with-shared
        make install

(rpm's are too limited for this)

It's not in the kernel...
