If you want to keep the name /root, you can create a symbolic link:
ln -s /somewhere/root /root
There is no need to change /etc/passwd.

Hi,
Have you tried using modules?
In this case you must append the following 3 lines in
/etc/conf.modules... I'm considering they both use the "ne" module. You
must substitute "ne" by the correct module, if not.
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x7b80,0x7c80 irq=10,11
When you config *only one* of the cards, is it recognized?

Red hat 6.2 on Dell 7000 laptop
Compile kernel, 'cause I want to add 'support for NTFS'. Once it's
done, after reboot. The 3com pc card doesn't work. It used to work
before I recompiled kernel.
>From some doc on www.redhat.com, I 'find out' that after recompile
kernel, pcmcia isn't configed again automatically. I follow the
instruction from the redhat doc:
go to /usr/src/linux/pcmcia... directory
make config, looks ok
make dep, error is 'no such target'
make install, runs ok also
after I reboot, pc card still doesn't work.
Any idea? Thanks a lot!!

Running Mandrake 7.0
I have a 3Com 5610 ( USR PCI faxmodem )which is definitely compatible
with Linux. I have searched through some of the old usenet messages on
this topic, but haven't gotten a thorough explanation on how to make
this modem work, because it ( according to Windows ) is on Com5. Using
Kppp I can't get it to work.
The main responses to this problem involve 2 operations : IRQ and PnP
in the BIOS, and setserial in the kernel or within linux somewhere. I
went into my Bios and found nothing related to IRQ or PnP ( it
said "Phoenix BIOS ).
Any ideas?

This, of course, would mean moving root's home directory off the root
partition, which has implications for system recovery in the event of
disaster.

This is very true, and something I have to admit I overlooked. But, if you
can't find the standard home directory you're logged in with home as /.
This is standard procedure for users, as I've never tried it with root I
cannot say with certainty what *would* happen.

Maybe I'll try KDE next time as suggested by someone else here. That

Subject: ok, i'm fucking pissed. dual boot winnt and linux
Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2000 08:32:29 GMT
Hi,
I have a 20GB hard drive set up with a 4GB partition booting WindowsNT
Workstation and then a linux swap, a linux root, and a Windows
partition of 4 GB and then free space with 8 GB or so free.
Everything was working fine using the NT bootloader and a bootsect.lnx
file I copied from /dev/hda7.
I created a couple of windows partitions in the free space which moved
my linux root partition from hda7 to hda6.
It's now been a couple of hours and nothing I do can get me to boot
into linux. I either get a kernel panic unable to mount root partition
or I get a failed message with fsck saying bad block on /dev/hda7.
The fstab still says /dev/hda7 is mounted under / and I can only mount
it as read-only, so I can't change it.
I created a rescue disk with my other linux machine from the RH CD but
I can't even get less let alone vi so I can change the fstab.
I've tried using linux root=/dev/hda6, I've tried linux single
root=/dev/hda6, I've tried linux root=/dev/fd0, I've tried every
combination I can think of.
I've read the man pages for lilo, lilo.conf, rdev, and the bootprompt
howto and nothing works.
I even went back into NT and deleted the partitions I created since
nothing was stored on them yet and it still didn't work.
All I want to do is tell Linux to boot from hda6 not hda7 and have
fsck check /dev/hda6 not /dev/hda7.
I seem to get as far as setting the hostname which is in rc.sysinit,
but then it fails checking /dev/hda7 which is now a windows partition
not a linux partition.
How do I tell fsck to check /dev/hda6 not 7 if root=/dev/hda6 doesn't
work and append="root=/dev/hda6" doesn't work and boot=/dev/hda6,
doesn't work and the fucking rescue disk doesn't allow me to mount my
root partition in read-write mode so I can change the fstab, which is
where I think fsck is lookng for which filesystems to check?
At this point I'm ready to blow out the linux partitions and just
install it by itself on a second hard drive and the hell with this
partition bullshit. But I'd really like to know how to do this.
thanks
mike

Hi People,
I am running RH 6.1 as a gateway machine from a 56k
connection & ,,am getting there SLOWLY. The logging below doesnt seem to be
causing any serious problems,at least that i can see.
Its just that it shows up all the time & would love to know what it means &
secondly how to fix it.
I have looked on friends machines & they dont have these entries..

Subject: Newbie : Corel Linux Will Not Install
From: Cowboy Bob <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

OK here's my problem and it's got me completely stumped. I'm
trying to install Corel Linux (the version that was given away on
Personal Computer World in the UK 'cos downloading 500+ Mb on a
56K modem is not feasible) and I cannot even get the install
routine working. I've created my boot disc and then restarted my
PC. LILO starts up and goes through the hardware detection
routine - this appears to work fine. Then the screen goes black
and a message saying "starting graphical install" appears. Much
whirring of CD and hard drive then happens and finally my CD-ROM
spits out the CD and the PC reboots again. On reboot exactly the
same happens again - it just goes round in circles.
I'm thinking that there may be some incompatibility in the BIOS
because I had a similar problem when installing BeOS - but I
uncheckd PnP OS in the BIOS and now BeOS works fine. I'm assuming
that Corel Linux has a larger compatibility range than BeOS as it
is more widly supported so I can't see that I have any
incompatible hardware. I'll try and list my hardware below but
without taking my PC apart I can't get all the model #'s:-
AMD K6-2 450MHz CPU
SOYO motherboard
Toshiba 32x DVD-ROM
UDMA-66 18Gb HD (don't know the manufacturer)
SB AWE64 Soundcard
ATI Rage 128 AGP graphics
Internal Zip drive (ATAPI)
External HP7200e CD-RW (Parallel)
External Diamond SupraExpress 56e modem
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Bob
