Hi everyone,
I need some help with IBM websphere for Linux.
I'm running a Suse Linux 6.3 (intel), with no network,
excepted a modem for ppp connections.
I installed successfully IBM HTTP server, and ran it ok.
I have a working IBM JDK 1.1.8, and set JAVA_HOME ok.
I then installed Websphere, and now the HTTP server doesn't
start anymore.
In the logs I can find this:

there is a program called waterfall that should cool your system down. That
is in windows...there oughtta be something similar for linux or it might be

Hello,
I've downloaded RPMS packages and files in base directory from
ftp.redhat.com site.
How do I install Red Hat 6.2?
Which image file do I put in lilo.conf file? My computer doesn't have
Floppy drive. I tried boot from bootnet.img file but, it didn't work.
Is it possible booting from other distribution CD-ROM and chooses
Red Hat installation package in HDD?

Well, thanks for everybody's help. This has been fixed, and apparently not
only do you have to RTFM, you also have to LATFM (Look At The 'F'
Machine). The whole time the box was booting off the floppy drive, thus
negating all my lilo changes :) I'm not a complete moron though: the box
was in a locked server room and I couldn't get to it until today...
Anyway FYI:
- The 512m vs 512M is irrelavent
- My append = "mem=512m" line is outside both of the image sections and is
fine.
- I had to change the bios setting to be "bios=0x80" for my box.

Ok... from memory... in /java/jre/fonts there's a file namedd fonts.dir...
Edit that file to include at the bottom of the file:
symbol.ttf -urw-symbol-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-adobe-fontspecific
then go to the top and INCREMENT the number there by one...
Then grab symbol.ttf off a windows95 machine and place it in the same directory
or use the one(s) from the URW font tar file...
That SHOULD fix your "missing font" problem.
Been there... done that... bought the t-shirt.

Some things just need to be written. You can do this by moving stuff
that needs to be written to a writeable partition or ramdisk. You
will need to have /etc and /var writeable or move things out there
by means of symlinks. I built a "boot and run from CD" system a while
back (and plan to do so again with Slackware 7.1) where / was a ramdisk,
the CD was mounted as /usr, and symlinks were used to point to static
read-only files within special areas of /usr, and the rest lived in
the ramdisk. I wrote my own init program to find the CD (since I wanted
it to work regardless of what device the CD was on) and pre-mount it as
/usr before executing the regular init program to initialize the system.

Hi all,
I am trying to install Linux on my computer, but I ran into one problem:
During the initial part of the installation, when it is searching for HD's,
FDD's, SCSI-cards etc, the installation "stops" when looking for SCSI-cards.
I don't have any SCSI-card in my computer. I used the latest Debian version
and Caldera OpenLinux 2.2. Both had the same problem. I waited for more than
one hour. Installation on my old computer worked fine.
My system is as follows:
MSI-6195 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 650
Matrox G400 Marvel videocard
and of course some stuff like ide HD's & CD(-RW), parallel Zipdrives,
network-card, modem, etc.
Have you experienced the same problem, do you know a solution or do you know
how to skip that searching for SCSI-cards, please let me know.

This is a BIOS problem. I have found that if you turn off the power
management in the BIOS, all of the memory will be found by linux. This
has worked with AMI BIOS, the boxes I have with AWARD BIOS did not have
the problem.

I am a relative newcomer to Linux (not quite a newbie), but I am stymied

I have a Linux box running samba to which my LaserJet 6L is attached.
The printer is shared and useful to my Windows98 machine. My Windows98

machine with no printers of its own.
What must I do to access my Windows printers? I have tried to access
them, but know very little about printers/queues. Can someone help me
to straighten this out? Should I just go buy a dedicated print server?
Would a print server make any of this any easier?
Many thanks in advance.

Hi!
I need to set up a mail /web server at where I'm working, and after
thinking about it for a while, I thought it better to have a fault
tolerant set up. I sort of managed to determine what bits & pieces I'd
required... but putting it together is entirely another matter!!
I'd appreciate any help, pointers, advice, resources anyone could point
me towards.
The basic stuff are:
2 linux boxes, built-in dual channel SCSI RAID
1 load balancer
1 external RAID
RH Linux 6.2
(Mix well....ugghh)
What i need to do is to have the 2 Linux boxes to be identical, these 2
boxes access 1 set of data on the external raid. ie, there should be
only 1 set of mail app, mailboxes etc.
So these 2 boxes need to have their own OS? Can they share data?
A load balancer will determine which box gets the job etc. for a fault
tolerant setup.
How can I put everything together? Are there any extra special bits that
I require?
Is there a better way of doing this? ie, sharing data on 1 RAID
subsystem is a no-no?
Thanks in advance for your help!!
Bert

Subject: LILO and SCSI boot disk problems
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (C. Chan)
Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2000 23:19:59 GMT
I have a Dell 410 with 2xP-III-550 and the Adaptec AIC-7890 SCSI controller
built into the mainboard.
The disk is partitioned as follows:
Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1106 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 261 2096451 6 FAT16
/dev/sda2 262 650 3124642+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 * 843 1106 2120580 f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda4 651 842 1542240 83 Linux
/dev/sda5 843 875 265041 82 Linux swap
/dev/sda6 876 1106 1855476 83 Linux
As you can see LILO is installed under the LBA 1024 cylinder limit.
NT's FAT16 boot is in sda1, the NT NTFS partition in sda2, the
Linux / partition in sda4, followed by an extended partition containing
a Linux swap and /home logical partitions.
I am using the Ranesh boot loader on the MBR which seems to boot
NT OK. My lilo.conf just boots Linux and is installed onto /dev/sda4,
not the MBR since I have the Ranesh boot loader in the MBR:
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
timeout=50
#
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/sda4
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
read-only
When I issue lilo -r /, I get:
Warning: /dev/sda4 is not on the first disk
Added linux *
But I have the BIOS set to boot SCSI and the SCSI BIOS pointed
to the correct drive. And NT boots w/o problems. If I try to
boot Linux, LILO issues a LI and then freezes.
Any ideas? I've looked at the LILO documentation and according
to it there should be no problems.
(I then tried using grub but that failed when I did
setup (hd0) with an "Error: Invalid device requested".
So now I have to boot off a floppy which is ugly.)

I also got the same error message when I upgrade my graphics card. However,
the problem can be easily solved. Reboot the computer with the installation
disk. When asked for installation method, just choose "Upgrade" (Using this
method will not destroy any data already in the partition). The purpose of
this is to force Mandrake to detect the cards and reinstall the bootloader.
Reboot the machine and you will get your Mandrake 7.1 running with your new
sound card.
Hope this helps!

Kudzu recognized & configured my modem on first boot, but now I see
no reason to leave it turned on.
What's the "proper" way to disable an rc script? I usually rename
the file from "S99xxx" to "s99xxx", but I don't know if there's
a better way.
Also, am I the only one who thinks that "kudzu" is a stupid name
for a piece of system software? I prefer names that *mean* something,
rather than having to read the source just to figure out WTF this
does.

I'm about to inherit an old DEC Alpha box which has spent its corporate
life running NT4. I think it's 133MHz.
I want to put Linux on it to perform the following tasks:
IP ISDN gateway to ISP, maybe firewall, maybe proxy server, maybe IP
router,
Fax system, maybe offering network fax facilities to 95, 98, NT and
Win2k machines using either a modem or smart ISDN card.
Print spooler for HP LJ 4M+ PS600 and Epson Stylus Photo EX, offering
print services to 95, 98 NT and Win2k machines.
File server to 95, 98, NT and Win2k machines.
Am I going to get lucky with any or all of this ? If so, what is the
best distribution to use, and where can I get it in the UK ?
Cheers, J/.

You should probably use "ifup ethx" or "ifdown ethx" instead of
ifconfig... this will issue the proper route commands for you.

It's trying to look up the hostname of the gateway; if you do "route
-n" that hanging will stop.

This is beginning to sound like a configuration problem. Post back to
c.o.l.n. with some diagnostics.
