Subject: Display not getting set (Intel 810 chipset problem ?)
Date: Fri, 7 Jul 2000 17:14:45 -0700

Hi
I have an HP PC with Intel 810 chipset and a monitor whose vertical /
horizontal frequencies I can only guess at (ie. until someone tells me a way
to figure that out - 'cos the vendor doesn't respond)

During Linux installation (Redhat) - it tried to configure the monitor but
failed.

I tried to manually configure it through Xf86 file.
At the moment, running startx display letters in huge fonts and a part of
the actual display is visible on the screen.

I tried changing the resolution but it does not help
Then in the X 11 docs file - there is a statement which says that 810
chipset is by default not supported by the kernel - though it can be turned
on - method to switch it on is not explained .

If anyone has experienced similar problem and found a solution for this -
can it be shared

Thanks

in our lan with cron every 10 minutes (10,20,30,40,50 * * * *
fetchmail --syslog -a). the problem is that fetchmail sends every user a
message about whats doing. how can i say that fetchmail only sends his
log-files to root or better to a file eg /var/log/fetchmail.user. i try
fetchmail --file /var/log/fetchmail.user, but it doesnt work.

Use the date command (see: man date) to set the time while the
system is running. Or just use the BIOS setup to set the hardware
clock before booting, and Linux will use that time.

Linux doesn't need a driver if you truly have an IDE CD-ROM drive. I
have a feeling that you have some ancient drive that is hooked up
through a soundcard.

Yes Rod ,as a modem/sound card it was way ahead of most of the market
in it's technical aspects, but as usual IBM let it down with almost
non-existent support.It was released as a 24.4kb modem then a soft-
ware upgrade to 33.6kb.I replaced the card some 18mth ago so I don't
know if there is a 55.6kb u/g, IBM didn't intend doing so which was
why I changed.Even so the card has had its problems and mine was
replaced several times.

i have an atapi cdrom....it is on the pri ide channel as a slave to the HDD
ancient is the pc
it is an old compaq 486 with ALL of those GREAT proprietary goodies
(sarcasm...)
i scoped some more rh support sites and they said to do a linux
hdb=cdrom at the boot prompt
it seemed to like it but still wants the driver disk
when i cancel the driver disk dialog.....it goes to the kb, lang, etc.
i tell it to go to the local cdrom it does...
here is the weird part
the activity light flickers on the cdrom....but the drive does not spin!!!
rh setup then says it cant find files for the install there?!?!?

by the way, the drive works and shows up as ATAPI_CDROM in M$ W95 system
properties on another machine
sorry for the novel

Wait until Kernel 2.4 comes out. It has full usb support.
If you can't wait and are brave, you can try the development Kernel 2.3.99
which also has full usb support.

Subject: what is .config of a default RH kernel ?
Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 02:07:19 GMT

I'm trying to add a patch (specifically 801.1Q VLANs)
to my RH-6.2 systems and want to just add that one
feature, keeping everything else the same as the binary
kernel that comes out of the box from RH.

Is there anywhere that the .config that corresponds
to the RH-6.2 kernel is available so I can use that
as the default answers ?

Alternately, is it possible to query a system to tell
how its kernel is configured (ala the way you can run
perl with a verbose switch to show how it was compiled) ?

Any help would be appreciated (e-mail preferred if possible).

Thanks.

I have an old 486 running redhat 6.2. The box contains two Intel
etherexpress Lan Adapater 8/16TP. I use the module called eexpress.o to
config the cards with. They work fine if only one card is in the system
at a time. However when I put both of them in and try to use both of
them eth1 never comes up. The message displayed to the console is
"Delaying eth1 initialization." The setup in my /etc/conf.modules is as
follows:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias eth0 eexpress
options eexpress io=0X300 irq=5
alias eth1 eexpress
options eexpress io=0X240 irq=10

I manualy set each card accordingly to those settings. If anyone can
help me out here that would be greatly appericated.

Fortunately after a lot of time spending on that problem I fixed it...
it was due to a corrupt sendmail config file.... AFAIK fetchmail i
s trying to
connect to localhost and tries to send all incoming mail via smtp port...
So far, so good... I'm having fetchmail to fetch mail... even functionally..

but now, it seems, that sendmail doesn't send the mail it did get via
fetchmail to the local users.... what's wrong now ?

Can anyone send me his sendmail.cf to take a look at ?

All the .configs are in the kernel*src.rpm (on the 2nd CD). They wind up
in /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES IIRC. This is not the same as
kernel-source*rpm. Don't know for sure if they are in that one too or
not.

Go to the website of the manufacturer of the NIC card. Most of the well known
NIC cards support Linux.

Here is my experience with some NIC cards.
My AOpen ISA PnP Ethernet NIC card works fine and cheap $20 Canadian. And it
said it's hardware and driver was fully
ne2000 compatible. I plugged it in, and configured it. It works great!
I was helping my friend out with his network card, a Soho Fast Ethernet PCI
Card. RH6.0 said it was a tulip card, but it still did not work. We went to
the Soho website and download the driver and did a recompile for a modified
tulip driver.
We got it to work once, but something when wrong with the NIC, and my friend
did not want to pursue getting the NIC card to work with linux, since he did
his internet surfing on Windoze.

Well, who knows why I kept the files around, since I don't use
Mindspring any more. But I did, so here they are:

I think I fooled around with wvdial and pppconfig until I got the right

Bert;

You need assistance. Linux is not a clustering solution. A RAID 5
controller manages a set of 3 disks or more, not 2 servers. I'd suggest
finding a local reputable network consulting service.
