Subject: Problem with booting linux
Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 13:45:09 -0400

Hi!
I have a Suse linux 6.3 with Kernel SMP 2.2.13 installed on my
machine. It was actually working fine before but then to find out the exact
place of the kernel i made a change in the makefile. When i rebooted it,the
machine froze at saying "Calibrating APIC timer..."
I'm able to boot it from a boot floppy from suse linux 6.3 but it is not
booting the machine from the hard drive.I don't know how i should make it
work from the hard drive also.
Before my machine froze, the changes which i made are
   i looked at /etc/lilo.conf file,
  where the image=/boot/vmlinuz
In the /usr/src/linux directory, in the MAKEFILE,i made the change for
the install path=/boot where it was initially (before the reboot)given as
/boot/vmlinuz.
i did 'make install' and rebooted the machine, and that's when it froze.
This is the stage at which i am in.I thought i will explain the situation
at which it stopped working. If you have any idea about this, can you suggest
me as to what i can do?
How can i make a back up at least now before i make any more changes.

I appreciate your help. Thank you,
                Santhi

Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 17:52:34 GMT

Hi,

I recently pieced together an old 486 DX system with 8MB and 290MB HDD
for use as an IP Masq machine. I installed fine (from disk - I had no
choice) but after partitioning, when I used dselect to "Initialize and
activate the swap partition" it gave me an error saying that the device
was busy. This happened more than once (on more than one install
attempt) and so I just said use no swap but now I can't do anything
since there's not enough memory...any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

Subject: Re: beginner's question about Redhat6.2
Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 17:56:27 GMT

The majority of initialization *scripts* should be under /etc/rc.d/init.d
The rc0.d, rc1.d, etc dirs hold symlinks back to the files in
/etc/rc.d/init.d, so to edit what happens when entering runlevel 5, you need
to edit the file under init.d, not under rc5.d.

Anyhow, those are the initialization scripts. The actual config files are in
/etc or subdirs thereof. You can get a good explanation of a lot of them
in NET-3-HOWTO in /usr/doc/HOWTO. Under redhat, there are also extra
configuration files in /etc/sysconfig and network initialization scripts
under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.

Still, the best way to figure out what happens during the entire startup of
your system is to walk through /etc/inittab and track out through the scripts
from there. You would eventually track into all the scripts that are used to
boot your system and could see all the files they use to get their
configuration info.

For example, under RedHat6.1, early on /etc/rc.d/rc.sysint is called. Then for
each run level, /etc/rc.d/rc is called and passed the runlevel as a parameter.

The beauty of all this (after you start to figure out the scripting syntax) is
that there is no binary code that hides what is actually happening as your
system boots up. Besides, in Linux even the biaries you might run into
(device drivers, etc) have the source code if you REALLY want to get to the
heart of what happens.

That will change it for existing users, but not for new users. Under redhat,
to change the default shell for all new users run linuxconf, and go into
-Config-User Accounts-Policies-Available user shells

You can change the default as well as what shells the user can select
themselves with chsh

What is your main computer? Even on a celery-300, xmms only uses about 4%
cpu. Granted it uses some RAM, but if you are that tight on memory, adding
RAM to a modern PC is way cheaper than added the same amount to an old system.

Subject: Re: ATTN: Promise Ultra66 owners
Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 18:18:45 GMT

On Mandrake 7.1, the Promise Ultra66 controller works just fine for me in
UDMA66 mode in all. On my main Linux box at home I installed Mandrake 7.1
to a disk drive on the Promise controller without a hitch. On my brother's
Linux server (also Mandrake 7.1) I put a Promise Ultra66 controller on it
along side its Adaptec 2940U2W after Mandrake 7.1 was installed to the
10,000 RPM SCSI drive on it and it still detected and used the Promise card
without a hitch. There was nothing special that I had to do like pass
parameters to the kernel on boot like what you are talking about. (I used
hdparm to optimize the transfer mode and I modified fstab to mount the drive
on the controller on boot, but that was all that I had to do.)

Something else to consider is that I did look around (like www.linux-ide.org
and www.kernelnots.org) and found evidence that support has been out for a
while for UDMA66, but it hasn't come standard in the stable kernels yet. It
is supposed to come standard in the 2.4 kernels. Support has come in the
way of patches for current stable kernels.

For the reasons stated above I believe that the support issue of the Promise
Ultra66 controllers along with other UDMA66 controllers in the stable
kernels is more of an issue with how the Linux development world operates
and less with the manufactures like Promise. Why put a lot of effort into
drivers for an OS when that OS community is already putting in an effort for
you? Also, if you where working on a "not for profit" project like the the
Linux kernel development team and you didn't have someone like Bill Gates
breathing down your throat and telling you that it needs to be released now,
wouldn't you take your time to look at the bigger picture, put your drivers
together in the best way that you can think of, and test the hell out of the
whole scheme before releasing it to the general public?

Perhaps, but there are plenty of .asp only sources on the net. My local

The great thing about standards is that there's so many of them...

Use Xconfigurator to get close to what you want for resolution, etc.

After you get the resolution you think you want, try running xvidtune. Set it
to "auto" mode and start changing the screen size/position settings till you
get one you like. You can use the settings you get from here to change the
values for modeline in /etc/X11/XF86Config to get things exactly the way you
want them.

I wouldn't have though so since the message referred to a kernal NULL
pointer de-reference. Such things should definely not happen and may
be an indication that a piece of hardware is malfunctioning, or that the
kernel is now in a not entirely consistant state.

You could do an orderly shutdown remotely though.

Yeah, there will be some wild translations going on. My 20Gb drive shows up
as having 2482 cylinders, but that is ok as long as it gives you the correct
size for the drive and you don't get wierd things like overlapping partitions,
etc. How many cylinders, Sectors,Heads does your BIOS say your drive has when
in LBA mode? You can feed those to fdisk and probably get it to work fine,
BUT, there is no gaurantee Windows will handle the drive right, and may
overwrite your Linux partition. It may be time to contact your HD
manufacturer and/or MoBo manufacturer and see what they have to recommend.

Use Postfix instead of Sendmail. It's a hell lot easierbto set
up.

A few things... first, you don't have to log in before pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2
second, it doesn't turn off the X server. It's still running, just that you
switch to console #2 which does not have X running in it from console #7 which
does.
third, while in "text" mode, Alt+F1 through Alt+F7 will change to other
consoles, however, the Alt+F7 console has X running

So maybe this is a bit picky, but I think the first one is a big deal.
Because if his X is configured wrong, it might repeatedly try to respawn X
which will make it virtually impossible for him to do anything in any other
console.

Subject: HELP My Networking is in Delay!
Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 19:01:10 GMT

ARGH! *Newbie Alert*

Ok, I had my Linux system up and working GREAT! (RH6.2) Had just
successfully upgraded the kernel (2.2.16-3smp) and installed all of the
security upgrade erattas. Everything was cooking. It had one NIC (3COM
503b) connected to my cable modem served hub. Networking was working great.
. all was right with the world.

So it was time to move on to the next project. Setting up the Linux box as
a firewall. First I started with installing a second nic (Intel Etherpro
100). Never got it working. Kudzu found the card and suppossedly
installed it. But I couldn't get it to work. Either DHCP (My Cable modem
provider uses DHCP, and I have two addresses available) or static IP. Eth0
kept working fine, but never could I get eth1 online. Constantly it would
fail. When I attempted to bring it up using 'ifup eth1' I get the message
'Delaying Eth1 initilization' And nothing happens. After countless
combinations of installtion, and uninstalling both cards, and messing with
the ip configurations to attempt to get eth1 online, I finally gave up. So
I reconfigured the hardware back to the origional setup, and all of the
networking parameters in linuxconf back to how they were before I started
this mess.

AaAARGH! Now Eth0 is " Delaying startup'. Remove. . reinstall. . . no
help. At this point I can't get my Linux box to initialize my NIC! It
KNOWS they are there. . .it just wont initialize them. What am I missing?

TIA!
