I also had a rough time with login after a security breach on my system.
there is a rootkit called the t0rnkit that was used and is commonly found
in /usr/src/.puta .
this rootkit has a trojan login and sshd amongst the list of other hax0r3d
binaries.
you can read about it at www.cert.org and search for t0rnkit.

hope this helps

if you want a full distribution, the best way to do it is with a cd
install...
it would be hard to set up (as a beginner) doing it peace by piece.

if you want to try a small distribution which can be installed on a dos
partition
and is pretty small and easy to set up
do a web search on www.google.com and look for pygmy linux

Go to www.debian.org, to the package page, search on rpm and look down the
list. You will see a zlib1g which is a runtime compression library and
bzip2 which does compression also. Betcha you don't have either of these
and if you have one, maybe the second.

If you have somehow gotten a CMOS password, you'll probably have
to short the CMOS Reset jumper momentarily (1/2 second should do) on
the motherboard. Check the motherboard manual to find out which
jumper it is. Then you'll have to reset your CMOS settings.

Once you have the ability to boot from floppy, do that.
If your boot loader is LILO, you may be able to fix your problem
by passing an init level to the kernel that prevents trying to
go into X. On some distros, the init level for text mode is 3, on
some it is 2. Look at your documentation to see which it is.
If text mode is 2, try this at the lilo prompt

BOOT> linux init 2

This assumes that "BOOT>" is the boot prompt from LILO; that
the name of the kernel is "linux" and that run level 2 is the text
mode. From there, you can log on and fix "/etc/XF86Config" using the
program "XF86Setup". Another option on some distros is the program
"xf86config". Note that the case is different between the two
programs. I have always had better luck with "xf86config".

I'm not security wiz, but it appears to me you may be the
victim of a hack attempt. The promiscuous mode means that
all traffic on the LAN segment will come to your adapter
rather than being ignored by it. This is not difficult to
do. It allows you to look at all traffic on the segment.
If you were not near the computer at the time, it may be
that someone else on the LAN segment, or even outside the
LAN has hacked into your system, gotten root privileges,
and started using your system to eavesdrop on others on
the net. This is definitely not a good thing.

Try checking in on some of the security newsgroups for linux.
They could give more information than I can. It's possible
that this is not a problem, but from my inexperienced and
ignorant perspective, it doesn't look good.

I had to abort 7.0 due to other problems that I encountered but there is a
bulletin on the redhat web site about problems with the MySQL that shipped
with 7.0. The link off the top page that says 'update notice' eventually
gets you to a screen with the following info.

========
The mysql packages shipped with Red Hat Linux 7.0 don't allow users to
access the socket, causing the package to work for users "root" and "mysql"

only. Also, the pid file handling has been fixed.
=======

I'd say load the latest and try again. Hope this helps.

I have just upgraded my system to Slakware 7.0 (kernel 2.2.14). I have

out by the "who" command when they exit. The "w" command shows
everything as it should be. This is causing a problem as I have limits

else have this problem - if so how do I fix it?

If that is the actual message then leon turned Promiscuous mode on for
the eth0 device. If an adapter is in promiscuous mode there is a good
chance an intruder has installed a packet analyzer on the system.

This works for me on a redhat system.

To compile the module you will need to log in as "root", or "su" to
root.

You can download the latest version of the Tulip.c driver from one of
the links below, or copy it from the Linksys disk that came with the
ethernet card:

       http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=25
       ftp://ftp.scydld.com/pub/network/tulip.c

Next you need to add a directory named "inet" to /usr/src/linux/net
with the following command:

       mkdir /usr/src/linux/net/inet

Then copy the tulip.c module into the inet directory with this:

       cp /path/to/tulip.c /usr/src/linux/net/inet/

First you remove the old module.

       rm -f /lib/modules/kernel_version/net/tulip.o

In order to be able to compile the module you need to be in the inet
directory. This can be done with the following command.

       cd /usr/src/linux/net/inet

Use one of the commands below depending on what is needed by your
system.
Be careful of typo errors, they will cause the compile to fail.

1.) To compile the Tulip module, issue the command below, it must all be
on one line:

gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`

2.) For a dual processor system, compile it with the command below, it
must all be on one line:

gcc -D__SMP__ -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`

Once compiled you need to install it as follows:

To install the new

       cp tulip.o /lib/modules/kernel_version/net

You need to add the "tulip" module to /etc/conf.modules using the
correct device (eth0, eth1, etc...).

       alias eth0 tulip

Now update the "modules.dep" file by issuing the following command:

       depmod -a

>From this point most of the time all that is needed is to restart the
network for the new module to be activated. You can do this with the
following:

       /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart

If you want to check it prior to restarting the network, you can issue
the command below and then check /var/log/messages for any errors.

       modprobe tulip.o

The module is installed correctly, if no errors appear in the logs.

If you tested the install you need to unload it from the kernel with the
command and then restart the network:

       rmmod tulip.o

Apache should run quite well on that hardware, I guess you don't have too
heavy traffic. You can try boa if apache is to demanding for that pc.

Never heard of that, but that doesn't mean it isn't true (I don't follow
kernel discussions). I know for sure that multiple swap partitions can
and will be used by the kernel (obviously not for the kernel itself)
although you will have to do some heavy memory requiring stuff to see it
getting used. (I hardly ever use my swap space at all)

I forgot this in my other post:

Give it a try if you really want to know, just create a swap file that's
larger than 128M and start loading your PC with nice memory users (lots
of graphical stuff will do fine :-))

run top to see what happens (and start killing programs when you're
convinced, running out of memory isn't something that is handled well by
the kernel)

1) create a linux bootdisc (You should already have one!)
2) make sure it works (boot from it!)
3) reinstall windows (your MBR will be overwritten)
4) boot linux with the bootfloppy
5) run `/sbin/lilo -v`

That's all there's to it

That's no solution, but if you're satisfied with it...

You can always do the following (But it's the least intuitive X
configuration tool, but IMHO the most powerfull and failsafe)

1) enter runlevel 3 (that's enter `init 3` at a console, or 'linux 3' at
the bootprompt)
2) as root, run `xf86config` (keep those manuals at hand)
4) try the new XF86Config file, by typing `startx` (don't skip this!)
3) enter runlevel 5 (same as above, change the 3 into 5) (this isn't
required, but I'm not sure what runlevel you usually are in)

Then I assume you have multiple screen resolutions defined.
The virtual screen is automatically set to the largest resolution, but
the actual resolution chosen is the first in line. Try
<ctrl><alt><numpad +> to switch between resolutions.
You can either remove the not used resolutions, or make sure the largest
is first.

Subject: HELP! Change partition table

                    Hi!
(Please excuse my English - it's not my native tongue...)

After compiling and installing lots and lots of software on my box I found out, that
there's something wrong with my partition table. I think that's a potential risk of
loosing all my data.

Here's the output of fdisk -l :

08:41:46:root>fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1650 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1             1         1      4504+  83  Linux
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary:
     phys=(9, 0, 1) should be (9, 254, 63)
/dev/hda2             1       638   5120136   83  Linux
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary:
     phys=(1023, 255, 63) should be (1023, 254, 63)
/dev/hda3   *       638       893   2048256   83  Linux
Partition 3 does not end on cylinder boundary:
     phys=(1023, 255, 63) should be (1023, 254, 63)
/dev/hda4           893      1651   6087312    5  Extended
Partition 4 does not end on cylinder boundary:
     phys=(1023, 255, 63) should be (1023, 254, 63)
/dev/hda5           893      1276   3072352+  83  Linux
/dev/hda6          1276      1292    131512   82  Linux swap
/dev/hda7          1292      1651   2883352   83  Linux

Disk /dev/hdb: 32 heads, 63 sectors, 1050 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2016 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1   *         1      1024   1032160+   6  FAT16
Now I haven't got the disk space to backup everything and repartition my drive.
So if anybody knows a way of changing the partition table without destroying the data
on the disk I'd appreciate it a lot!
(All partitions are on ReiserFS except partition hda1, which is mounted on /boot)

Regards
Franz
