Yes, ipchains is still available under Linux 2.4. The only thing to remember
is that you need to load a module to enable it. Once the module is loaded it
works like it normally does. With the introduction of Linux 2.4 comes a more
improved packet filtering mechanism. It is known as iptables which is the
more popular ip packet filtering approach in the new kernel. You can find out
some more information at the following address:

http://netfilter.samba.org/unreliable-guides/packet-filtering-HOWTO/index.html

If you are going to get into the NAT business, you will want to take a look at
this URL as well:

http://obrien.freeshell.org/files/howto/NAT-HOWTO.html

See ya

Just updated Mandrake 7.2 to 8.0, and having some troubles.

After fighting with getting Linux actually on my system for 2 days, I
updated it with 8.0. During the update, about 85% through, it was erroring
out like there was no tomarrow. I figured that maybe, I could at least get
into linux, and install the rest from inside it.

And it did work. I was able to get in fine, looked about. It didn't seem as
though anything was wrong, but there is. When I go to Control Center->Look
N Feel->Font Manager, I get an error that says,
libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3:cannot load shared object file: No such file or
directory. I look for libc6 on my system, and I can't find it.

So I try to install it, and I'm just guessing on this, that it is included
within either GLibC or libstdc++ distribution. But everytime I try to
install these two rpm's, the manager says they're already installed.

I've even tried the command line rpm --force --install [rpm name] and each
tiime I try it seems to install, but the error keeps coming up. I even
thought I should reboot, which I did, and no luck.

Also, I thought maybe, I should uninstall the libstdc++ and when I tried,
it said it wasn't installed, even though when I try to do the install, it
says its installed.

What the heck is going on. What can I do, besides reinstalling everything?

Thanks
Ken

You haven't mentioned if you've set the driver name in your XF86config-4
file. Setting 'glx' is right, but check under the 'drivers' section. If it
says the driver is 'nv', change it to 'nvidia', and things should come good.

I have been very disappointed with some of the sites I have looked at so
far, even linux.org and RedHat's own documentation site seems to refer to
kernels and XFree versions that are way out of date now.

Where is all the good current up-to-date stuff?

may be under Linux at all). Is goes such way: i use a koi8-r encodinhg

any apps under gnome and other DM. But Netscape don`t accept russian
letters (in edit boxes and other controls, but show them in browser) when
i launch it under gnome (or any DM). But when i exit and save session with
opened Netscape, later, when i`m log in, it works as it have to. But if i
close it and open again, the bug apeear again.
What is the problem? Is there any way to fix it?

Yes,
Lilo will not recognize your windows partition on install, you just have to
add it manually (during install) and will have no prob installing it to the
MBR.

If you have enough memory I think it's not a problem. I did with
RH 6.2 (I had only 1 Gb of hard disk, but 256 Mb of ram...).

You can run it without a swap, depending on the amount of memory that you
have, and the amount of applications you want to run on it.

You can always, after installing, create a swap file, using the 'mkswap',
'swapon' command, and use that for swap memory. This is not generally
recommended (because it's fairly slower than a partition), though if you've
got a lot of memory, or if you're running only a few apps, this might be the
way to go for the few times that you do want to run large apps.

Speaking only for myself,
Peet

It depend on how much RAM you have. Also, the new 2.4 kernels need more
swap that the 2.2 kernels do, so you may have troubles if you upgrade.

Swap does not require a primary partition, and will live happily in an
extended partition.

I'm fairly sure I have setup my office computer to boot linux with the
root filesystem on an extended partition as well (but I'm at home and
cannot check). That computer boots linux from the WinNT boot menu. Look
for a program called "bootpart" that makes this easy.

Dear readers,

This newbie has a question about the use of RAID. Next week I'll have
to install a new samba/apache/mysql/php-machine in our office.
This machine will should be a 24/7-production system.

It will have te following hardware:
Dual 1 Ghz Pentium motherboard with scsi onboard
2x 1 Ghz Pentiums
2x 37,5 Gb scsi-disks
1 Gb ecc RAM

Must be enough to handle quite a load ;)

The question I have is:
I want to put the two scsi-disk in a mirroring RAID, so If one hardisk
fails the system still functions. Does the use of the RAID accomplish
this?

Do have to install everything first on one drive and make the
RAID afterwards.

I'd like to use Slackware because I'm most used to this distribution!

Thanx in advance,
