According to thier help section, though it is a java applet, it takes
advantage of some Windows-specific features/device-drivers and will not work
on anything other than Windows. They say they have a Mac version under
developement, but NONE of the PC-to-phone sites I have found have Linux
support and if they mention it at all it's about how to configure IPMASQ, or
to say that they have no plans to support Linux.
I wish dial-pad.com would work with the Linux community to get some kind of
support, even if it were something that had to be installed. Lets face it,
a great many of us are either cheap, or are working-stiff types that will take
advantage of a chance to save money if we can.

You built Your Kernel with usb-printer-support? You did a modprobe printer?
And you created the appropriate device and used it instead of /dev/lp0?

Actually, I don't think RedHat chose them. They mirror runlevels that existed
before RedHat. (Before Linux for that matter I believe.)

Yeah, I have to conceed on that one. My favorite local radio station also
only uses .asp format. Wonder why so many ppl are using .asp when the sound
quality is so poor. Is MS giving the .asp server away with IIS now too?

some have had problems like yours. Their fix was to swap the
ethernet wires on the back of the pc. When they put the second
nic in, it became eth0 instead of eth1.
Be sure to reset/power cycle the cable modem. It will only
talk to the nic it sees when it starts up.
here is how I have my linux firewall setup
Except for 192.168.x.x (Private network) numbers
these ip addresses are for this discussion.
eth0 and eth1 Network Interface Cards (nic) are in my firewall.
eth1 numbers can be left out if you do not have one.
Your ip numbers can come from win9x
Click Start, Run winipcfg MoreInfo on win9x box
If you have dynamic address (dhcpcd), the host name give by
your isp may be required or Some ISP have to put the nic
card's MAC address into their database. Not having one or the
other correct will cause dhcpcd to fail.
Some people have problems when they put the second nic in the
machine. What can happen is the new card becomes eth0.
Check nic mac address (HWaddr) with "ifconfig" before
and after second nic install.
24.x.x.xx is your isp assigned address.
24.x.x.1 is your isp gateway.
Some cable modems must be powercycled/reset if nic card is
not the one connected when cablemodem was last reset/powered up.
Change dhcp to none in netcfg if you have a static ip address.

You can get drivers from www.XFree86.org. They won't be in rpm format so you
will have to
read the documentation and configure.
I recently aquired the Voodoo3 3000 and had to upgrade XFree86 to version 4.0
which had the

Subject: Stupid question?? VFAT partitions
Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 20:10:27 GMT
This is probably a stupid question.
I boot multiple OS'es on my computer, and I want all of them to be able
to see the same mail directory.
In other words, I want Netscape Mail under Linux to be able to store my
mail files on a VFAT partition on C: (ie the same directory where all my
other Netscapes store my mail when I am running W95, OS/2 v 3, OS/2 v 4,
etc. All installations of Netscape on my other partitions point to my
C: drive, so that I can keep all my mail in one place, regardless of
what partition/OS I am booting.
Under any of my Linux distros, I can't write to my C: file unless I have
root privileges. But since VFAT drives don't understand such things as
file permissions, CHMOD, etc on the directory doesn't seem to have any
effect.
I have checked the options for the MOUNT command, but can't spot any
that permit read/write privileges to ordinary users. However, a large
part of my problem is no doubt just total unfamiliarity with the system.
How do I set up my FSTAB so that ordinary users have write access to the
C: drive? I don't want to have to log in as root every time just to get
my mail.
Any and all suggestions gratefully received. Any and all flames
regarding RTFM probably warranted, but I just can't spot the answer in
any of the help material, man pages, etc.

Have you made sure you have execute permissions turned on for your

(chmod +x /etc/rc.d/init.d/S90sybase)
I figure you do but I thought I'd ask.

Take a look under (man 8 mount) and look in the section "Mount options for
fat".
There you'll find two possible solutions (both can be added to fstab.) The
first is uid={user id for your login here} the other would be umask=0.
The uid mounts the partition with you as owner so you can use/edit all the
files. The umask=0 would mount the partition with permissions of 777 which
gives full rights to ALL users. (I'd recommend uid over umask here for
security reasons.)
A sample for your /etc/fstab would be:
/dev/hda5 /mnt/fat-c vfat defaults,uid=500 0 0

First of all, the mount options for fat are recognized. The
dotsOK option is explicitly killed by vfat. Furthermore, there are

So if I understand this correctly, I just need to figure out the number for my

More data required.
I'm assuming an IDE system, your HD will be /dev/hda. If not, modify
accordingly.
Post exact commands and output from the following, run as root:
$ fdisk -l /dev/hda
One of the partitions listed should be a swap partition. If not, you
need to repartition your hard drive. Post for details. Stop here.
Otherwise, see what's using it, eg: /dev/hda3 (substitute as
appropriate):
$ fuser -m <swap device>
If there are processes accessing this partition, you can get more detail
with:
$ fuser -mv <swap device>
You may want to try killing these or post for more information. Stop
here.
Otherwise, if no processes are using this device, you can try creating swap
yourself manually. THE FOLLOWING WILL OVERWRITE ALL DATA ON THE
PARTITION IRREVOCABLY, DOUBLE CHECK YOU'RE TARGETING THE RIGHT PARTITION.
Again, <swap device> should be your swap partition, eg: /dev/hda3:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=<swap device>
$ sync
$ mkswap <swap device>
$ sync
$ swapon <swap device>
$ cat /proc/swapinfo
This either worked or failed. Report back with results.

Subject: Warning! -- SONY SUBSTANDARD SERVICE!
Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 21:20:55 GMT
Anyone considering the purchase of a Sony peripheral for their computer
might want to give it some further thought. There clearly is not a
reciprocal relationship between what they sell and what they service.
-
I purchased a CD-RW drive back in April that just recently went bad
(won't read). When I called Sony service, I was told that I could not
get a replacement and that I had to ship it across the country to be
"repaired" (and we all know what that means...) - with a three (3) week
turnaround. Assuming that they keep their 3-week commitment, with
shipping both ways, I'd be without the use of the unit for at least
five weeks!!!
-
I hardly think that's reasonable or fair.
-
Compare this to HP, who under the same circumstances would simply ship
you out a replacement unit and issue a call-tag for the old one.
-
Sony is a behemoth in the marketplace and as such, they have an
obligation to scale their service facilities to meet demand. To not do
so is an indication of their lack of commitment to customer satisfaction
and an unwillingness to stand behind their products.
-
Buyer be ware!

Query the package directly:
$ rpm -qilp gnosamba-0.3.3.rpm
man rpm for more information.

Maybe 4 weeks if they send you a box to FedEx it. However, they estimated
7 working day turnaround for my scrambled laptop screen and that grew to 4
weeks to get a part, which judging from the repair order was just a bumper
to keep something from touching. They did call to say that if the part
did not arrive soon, they were prepared to offer me a refurbished unit if
I did not want to wait.

I have always had trouble with printer drivers included with HP printers
not working (HP 4L and 5L) and finding them difficult to get ahold of.
And if something is out of warranty they charge per answer. When we had
an inkjet Fax machine break down, they did promptly ship out a replacement
(once I finally got through to them) before I returned the defective one.
But that had the same unreliable paper handling design flaw that the
original one had from the time it was new.
I have had good experience with Gateway sending out a replacement item
before a defective item was returned, but I have not had to do that for
many years, so I cannot say if that is still true.
