I'm currently receiving news and mail messages via FTP as text files. I'd like to be
able to put these messages on my local server (leafnode and exim respectively), but I
don't know how to move the messages from the state of not being on a server to being
on one. Can anyone suggest anything?

Hi all,
I'm having some problems installing kernel 2.4.3 and
have already upgraded to modutils 2.4.5 so I don't
think that's the problem.
The kernel compiles fine, it will boot.
The make modules runs fine, at least it doesn't give
error messeges.
make modules_install fails to install the modules
properly. The output it ends with is as follows:
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.3/arch/i386/math-emu'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `modules_install'.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.3/arch/i386/math-emu'
cd /lib/modules/2.4.3; \
mkdir -p pcmcia; \
find kernel -path '*/pcmcia/*' -name '*.o' | xargs -i -r ln -sf ../{} pcmcia
if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map 2.4.3; fi
I hope that means something to someone. I'm completely baffled.
Although I'm willing to beleive that I'm just being dumb and
have failed to upgrade some package or other that I should have
done. Where would I check to find out?
Thanks

Hi Julien!
Everything is not lost yet.
Create a small primary (83) partition /boot.
Create large Linux extended (85) and in it logical partitions swap, / (root),
/usr and whatever else.
Have fun.

Subject: problems with iptables DNAT and blocking rules
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 13:58:46 +0200
I have a router with linux and iptables and two network cards and a
sangoma wan interface.
router
+---------+
[192.168.1.252]--| x.x.x.a |--eth0
| x.x.x.b |--wan0-----[internet]----[host foo]
+---------+
Now I want to connect from foo to 192.168.1.252 and therefore I have set
up an extra ip address x.x.x.a on the router and used iptables to
destination nat the packets. I also use source nat to let other machines
on the private network to access the Internet.
The iptables set up looks like the following and it works just fine.
# iptables -L -t nat -n -v
Chain PREROUTING (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt in out source destination
DNAT all -- * * 0.0.0.0/0 x.x.x.a
to:192.168.1.252
Chain POSTROUTING (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt in out source destination
SNAT all -- * * 192.168.1.0/24 0.0.0.0/0
to:x.x.x.b
Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt in out source destination
Now I want to set up some more blocking rules for the hosts attached to
eth0 on the router, so I set up the folowing, and after that, I cant even
ping x.x.x.a from foo. What could be wrong?
# iptables -L -n -v

I am trying to install Lotus Domino on a Redhat 7.1 box. The software
installs fine but the configuration is carried out by connecting to port
8081 (http).
When I type localhost:8081 to the browser I get the response "Could not
connect to host localhost (port 8081). When I check the processes (with ps)
I can see the domino process running with status R.
However if I edit the apache conf file and tell it to listen on port 8081
and then try I get a reponse.
Any suggestions/explanation of what could be the proble would be
appreciated.

Hi,
I'm having continuing problems getting pppd running with kernel 2.4.2 --
I hope someone can help.
I've installed kernel 2.4.2 on my pc, which is running redhat 7.0. I've
upgraded _all_ relevant packages to at least the version stated in the
Changes file (in particular I'm using version 2.4.0 of ppp downloaded
from the redhat7.1 RPM tree). I've compiled the kernel for ppp and I've
inserted the ppp aliases into the modules.conf file as stated in the PPP
section of the Changes file. On launching kppp (I'm using KDE2.1 and
have upgraded kdenetwork and kdenetwork-ppp to 2.1.1) things appear to
start off fine but then, whilst logging on, pppd dies and the kppp
window freezes and goes blank. Looking at /var/log/messages I see the
the system is trying to look for the non-existent module ppp0. Can
anyone tell me why it's looking for this and how to get things working?
By the way, I also have kernel-2.2.16 installed and everything still
works fine when I boot with that.
Thanks in advance,
Eamonn.

My HP-C 5GB works fine with BRU and that kernel (RH6x, updated). I got
some response when I played with st0, but ht0 has always worked. NOTE: you
cannot mount the drive and use it like a disk. It works just fine,
unmounted, as a backup device.
How many tapes did you try? I have had several of them fail.

I run Redhat 6.2 dual boot Win98SE.
All has worked beautifully until this morning. I had problems with my dial

I reluctantly reset the machine & now get a warning "not able to start

input.
Hoping someone out there can send me a simple solution (other than
reinstalling RH6.2).
I want my linux back!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so sick of Windoze!!!!!!!!

Se another post in this group: I had exactly the effect described
there when I used ht0 -- I could do whatever I wanted without
problems, but trying to read produced an I/O error. (If course I don't
try to mount it :-). ide-scsi seamed to work several days, but now
it's inoperable (probably until reboot, I already tried to remove and
reload the scsi-tape module.

Hi,
I have just upgrated my linux (Mdk 7.2 -> Mdk 8). Before everything was
ok but now i have two main problems ;-)
This is my Configuration :
Dell Laptitude with PCMCIA Xircom (Ethernet + modem card), wtih three
kernels (2.4.3 and 2.2.19-10 from Mdk 8 and 2.2.17-21 from Mdk 7.2) and
internal cdwriter.
First problem :
Under kernels 2.4.3 and 2.2.19-10 my ethernet card does not work (but it
works with the 2.2.17 kernel). With the 2.4.3 kernel the system writes
that it can not load ds.o.gz module, and it displays the following error
messages :
init_module : operation not permitted
Hint:insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
inluding invalid IO or ICQ parameters
When I read the /var/log/message file I have the following errors :
Apr 25 17:16:04 psi-j2-macnd kernel: Linux PCMCIA Card Services 3.1.25
Apr 25 17:16:04 psi-j2-macnd kernel: kernel build: 2.4.3-20mdk #1 Sun

Second problem :
The automount system does not work anymore (whatever the kernel i use).
In fact it seems there are two problems :
First, the ide-scsi mdoule is not loaded automatically (but i can
manuelly load) although in the lilo file configuration i have added the
option : append=" hdc=ide-scsi"
Second, autofs produce a strange error in the /var/log/message file like
this :
Apr 25 18:34:02 psi-j2-macnd automount[2130]: starting automounter
version 4.0.0, path = /mnt/cdrom, maptype = file, mapname = /etc/auto.cdrom

freq 75 secs
avr 25 18:34:02 psi-j2-macnd autofs: lancement d'autofs succeeded
What is the missing module ?
If somebody can help me?
Thank you for advance.

That should be done as part of the installation. It's called
"installing LILO" or "installing the boot loader" or some such. If
you're not seeing a prompt, chances are you told it not to do this, or
told it to install LILO somewhere that's not working for your system.
If the former, you'll need to boot Linux in some other way (say, via
LOADLIN, which should be on your install CD-ROM), edit /etc/lilo.conf,
and type "lilo" to re-install it; or rely on GUI tools like linuxconf
to help you do this. If the latter, and if Linux is installed on a
primary partition, it's conceivable you can get it to work by using
DOS/Windows' FDISK to change the active partition from the WinME
partition to the Linux partition.
For more information, check the Linux HOWTOs at http://www.linuxdoc.org,
among many other places. There are several that cover specific
multi-boot configurations, and I'm sure at least one is applicable to
your case. For still more information, you might want to check out my
book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/). It's overkill for just getting a
system booted, but it covers a lot more than that (the Web page has a
chapter listing).

Subject: probelms with RH 7.0 -> 7.1 Upgrade
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 14:17:01 +0200
Hi, I have a problems while updating my laptop, from RH 7.0 to 7.1.
The system I have is a Dell Inspiron 8000, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB HD.
I have windows ME and Linux RH 7.0 on it. The kernel I have is 2.4.2
I had no problems to install RH 7.0.
With windows ME, hybernation works properly, since I can put the laptop
to sleep, and it resumes properly. Never tried under linux.
I was trying to upgrade to RH 7.1 because I wasn't able to have the
sound
and the PCMCIA net card working at the same time. I have heard that RH
7.1
should be able to make everything working.
So, I burned a RH 7.1 CD, and I boot from it. The installation starts,
but
after the language and keyboard selection it stops with the follwing
message.
An error occurred reading the partition table for the block device
hda. The error was:
Logical partition of type 0 detected
This error has occurred because there is a logical partition on the
drive which has a partition type 0.... etc etc.
After that, installation stops.
This is what windows fdisk says about the partitions,
Partition Status Type Mbyte System
1 EXT DOS 298
2 A PRI DOS 10009 FAT32
3 NON DOS 8503
4 NON DOS 259
while this is what linux fdisk (under RH 7.0) says:
Device Boot Start End Id System
/dev/hda1 * 39 1314 c Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 1315 2398 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 1 38 5 extended
/dev/hda4 2399 2431 82 Linux swap
Now, I don't have any "type 0" partition... what I understand
from the linux fdisk, is that hda3 is the partition where the
hybernation-writing should go. According to documents posted on
www.linux-laptops.net dell inspiron 8000 section, the hybernantion
partition
should have some "strange type", whereas I have it as extended.
Well, any suggestions ???

Hi,
This may sound like a silly idea, or an impossible one, but here it is.
I dual boot win98se and redhat 7.1 both partitions are up, running and
healthy. The problem is, sometimes I download something in one O/S and
later discover that it would be useful while in the other. The windows
drives aren't an issue, as I have them set up in linux and can mount them to
access files stored there. The problem is that if I download something in
linux, and need it while in windows, I have to reboot, copy the file across
to the other drive (seperate physical drvies, not one partitioned drive) and
then boot back into windows.
There has got to be a better way, but I don't know it. any ideas?

Mount the windows partition and copy the files there.
Don't expect windows to be able to read anything but windows file systems.
