Subject: Redhat 6.0 / Xfree86_4.0 setup??
Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 00:49:55 GMT

Help Please.
I have redhat 6.0. The Xfree86_4.0 *.tgz's from xfree86.org. The Nvidia
drivers for a Riva TNT2 AGP (Gigabyte GA-660) video card. I have been
searching and looking and trying to get this all installed and working
with no luck so far. Here are some of the problems that I am
encountering:

1) While running the install.sh; when it comes time to make the font
directory, I get the following errors.
usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir: unable to process font
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/(multiple file names).pcf.gz skipping.
2) During the following reboot, I see a failure of the Xfont server.
3) When I try to install the NVIDIA drivers, the kernel goes in ok but
the OpenGL returns an error message that Xfree86_4.0 is required.

I read another message that Redhat6.0 is using a different RPM utility
than Xfree86_4.0 is using. So I tried to get rpm-3.0.5 i386, when I
tried to install this it came back with "popt is needed",
"bzip2>=0.9.0c-2 is needeed" and "libbz2.so.0 is needed"

If someone could share a short summary of how they got Xfree_4.0 in
Redhat 6.0, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ken Huckins

For named, or any other daemon you want to run when your system boots,
follow this procedure:

1.su to root
2. from the command line, run control panel
3. When the control-panel runs click on the run-level editor icon. It's
the second icon in the row. It looks like two sets of traffic lights.
4. Select the daemon you want to run.
5. Click on the add button below the list of daemons.
6. Another small window will appear. Select the run levels you want
named to run in. You probably want named to start in run levels 3 & 5,
and stop in run-level 1.
7. Click on done
8. Go back to the previous window, and click on execute if you want the
daemon to run now.
9. Click on file --> rescan rc.d
10. Click on file--> quit
That's it.

I hope this helps

Others have given you advice about how to mount VFAT partitions so that
everyone can write to them. Now my question is, will it work for, say,
Windows and Linux versions of Netscape to write to the same mail files.
I can't think of an example now, but I seem to remember that the two
versions don't write all of their files in exactly the same way. So
back up your files, and then please let us know how your experiment
works out.

Ah, oh course. I must not have been thinking - there would be quite a bit of
configuration of the soundcard/modem to enable that kind of service.

Watch freshmeat.net for some brilliant Linux advocate to decipher the Java
configuration applet and convert it to a Linux compatible configuration
script.

Do what I do, go and buy a copy of Windows from your local friendly pirate,
I paid about $20 for W98.

I just did this by installing Redhat 6.2 as an upgrade for the 6.1 I used.
The upgrade (not reinstall) was easy and I'm now with Kde along with Gnome :
I can choose which to use from the login menu. I'm not sure though whether
Redhat does this automatically, or found some part of Kde Base on my system :
I indeed did try to install Kde using GnoRPM, with no success...

I get these errors:

hdc: dma_intr: status=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }

ide1: reset: success

I noticed there's mention of similar errors in the configuration section
for the IDE driver, but it's not identical (I tried disabling multi-mode
anyway, but it made no difference).

I have two hard drives and one CD-ROM; here's the relevant boot
messages:

Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 6.19

(Other possibly relevant info: the machine is an IBM Aptiva 2170-802, K6
CPU, running Mandrake 6.0, Linux 2.2.9-19mdk; vanilla except for adding
the Maxtor drive and moving the other drives around, and adding a PCI
Ethernet board (D-Link DFE-530TX+, which works fine).)

I suppose I could disable DMA altogether for ide1, but I'd rather not...
Am I doing something wrong? Or is there something wrong with the disks?
After I noticed these errors the first time, the (VFAT) filesystem on
hdc1 was corrupted, but it may have been corrupted beforehand (I hadn't
scandisked it before); I have not noticed problems since (I run scandisk
every time, just to be sure, until I figure this out).

Thanks in advance,

Subject: 3 primary partitions, 1 ext w/ swap and ext2 with linux, system commander,
how to lilo?
Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 03:19:10 GMT

I have a 30GB HD with 3 primary FAT32 partitions (win9x,win2k,storage) and
an extended partition with a swap and ext2fs. System commander is installed
in the first fat32 partition, and I'd like to keep it.

I have RH62 with the newest lilo on that ext2fs in the extended partition,
and if I use the boot disk, it runs fine. With the new lilo, I was hopeful
that I'd be able to point system commander at the lilo installed on the
partition and go. The problem seems to be that I was forced into the
extended partition by the existence of my other three primaries. System
Commander won't mark that active/bootable, which makes sense.

Any ideas? Could I make four primaries *and* an extended just for the swap
file?

- Is there any performance issue when using a boot disk? Once the kernel's
in memory, there shouldn't be any adverse affects, right? I haven't seen the
boot disk accessed once.

Hi,

I have a linux system running. Had a VERY basic ipchains script running
fine, with a machine inside of the linux box. I was surfing through it fine
last night at 12:00, then at 6:30 this morning I notice something died. Odd
seeing as how it had only been a few hours, the machine wasnt even rebooted,
let alone changed in any way at all.

What I noticed is this error:
eth0: transmit timed out, status 0073, resetting

I can ping the 127.0.0.1 address, (from local machine of course) but cant
even ping either of the ip addys from the installed nics, let alone any
address on the internet.

I have tried rebooting, restarting network, disabling ipchains altogether,
altering ip addys and configs, etc.

Please let me know if you have seen this happen, or if I should just
reinstall. Hopefully not as it is an odd error, and I would hate for it to
happen again.

I have two different nics installed and both were working fine, now
everything seems to be blasted? (pcnet32 and 8390 {ne2k-pci})
When I lsmod both modules for the NICs are still loading up fine as well.

I appreciate ANY feedback you can offer, or any tips at all.

Hi Frank,
Not sure but you might try this, it worked for me.

    1) Create a new Folder/Directory on your root and call it something like
"Windows98". If you have KDE up and running you can do this with the KDE
file manager by pointing to the root and using the familiar
"File/New/Folder" routine. Otherwise use the mkdir command.
    2) Now mount the desired volume using: mount -t vfat /dev/hda8
/Windows98

Hope this helps,
Don G.

Crossposted-To: comp.os.linux.portable
Subject: Re: Thinkpad 380XD video frequencies
Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 21:56:21 -0600

Fernando,

HorizSync 31.5-37.9
VertRefresh 50-90

So then, Usually you'll have no problem as long as the frecuencies
indicated on each modeline entry are in corcordance with the limit
frecuencies indicated in the frequency-limits part of the file
referenced above.

Then even though the built in lcd screnn is not CRT-based, it is usually
given a vertical refresh rate of 60, even though there is not actually
an electron beam moving across a vacume CRT illuminating pixels and
turning on and off.

Now, even though LCD screens are usually said to run internally at 60hz,
you can up the frecuency to higher rates, in order to sucessfully synch
up through the external VGA output jack to external monitors or vid
projectors which want to see input signals in the ergonomic
VESA-stipulated frecuency ranges of 70~80Hz, while continuing to use the
internal display.

Part of the modeline includes the both frequencies to use. As long as
those freqs are within the limit ranges stipulated in an earlier part of
the XF86Config file, then they will be judged "acceptable" and not
parsed out of validity when X is firing up and parsing it's config
file. If the frecuencies are not within valid range, they are simply
parsed out of existence and ignored at this session.

As long as you have at least 2mb vid memory, you'll have no problem
displaying at 800x 16bit

Then, in the correct "screen" sections of the XF86Config file, ensure
that the resolutions appear in the order of your preference, so that the
first one referenced is then the default.

Good Luck I include my XF86Config file as an example to give you
something to compare to and maybe extract some informations.
