Subject: pppd runs OK(?) but still no connection to Internet
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 12:29:03 -0700

Hi all,
My ISP is MSN. A Windows98 connects OK having
DialUpNetworking|MSN|ServerTypes|TypeOfDialUpServer ==
PPP:Internet,WindowsNTServer,Windows98.
I am trying to connect there using Linux (on the box it sais
Caldera, kernel 2.0.35). After about two weeks I reached a more or less
stable condition where the pppd runs, I get a dynamic IP address (reported
by ifconfig), the gateways set properly (reported by route) but still not
a TCP/IP client working. The differences in the system's behaviour between
pppd running and not are (pppd running):
        1. I can ping the IP adreess assigned to me;
        2. when I ping the remote system (by IP) it just hangs forever
and after ^C reports 100% packet loss(without pppd running it reports
after every packet that the remote system is unreachable);
        3. Whatever I try to do by name (telnet, ftp, ping, ...) just
hangs forever (without pppd it at least sais that there is no DNS);
        4. netstat (if I'm not mistaken) with one of it's options reports
(-i ?) how many packets are sent and received (zeroes in the columns for
errors) and those numbers increase after I do something (ping to a remote
machine for example);
        5. I can ping 127.0.0.1 in both cases.
All this seems kind of confusing to me. I got the impression that packets
are going out but nothing comes back or something like this. I haven't
rebuilt the kernel to support MS CHAP because I am getting dynamic IP
address from the ISP using PAP (is that possible with MSN?).
So .... any input is highly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ivaylo

Hello

Something odd keeps happening whenever i connect to the net using kppp
with KDE on Mandrake 7.0...i'm unable to open any other applications. I
have to open Netscape and various other applications before I connect
with kppp. Anyone know why this happens or how I can stop it? Thanks

CK,

Try adding it to the last line in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, I run
them as
"# Boot the right web server...
/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start"
or
"# Added ssh 5/4/00
/usr/local/sbin/sshd"
[frank@tucky frank]$

always adding in the # reference line as good practice, then using the
the path and the executable, if you need more help email me direct, hope
this helps...

Hi Phil,

I'd recomend to read next HOW-TO before starting doing anythig
(if do not know this information yet)

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DOS-Win-to-Linux-HOWTO.html

There are some limits in DOS which you will not able to overcome and probably you
have to keep DOS partion as first partion on the disk as it also has a limit to
boot system. In case of Linux and upgrading to latest lilo you can overcome most
limitations. But there is another solution to use system boot loader like "system
commander" http://www.v-com.com company. This software allow you put linux on any
cylinder and write lilo boot sector on same partion.
You can not read Linux files from DOS as DOS doesn't have idea about Linux
partition but you can get access from Linux to DOS partition without any problem.
Please format you disl in LBA mode as it will simplify many problem.

Config one: IDE disk (Partition 2 and tree are extended) and we use lilo as boot
manager
Partion 1 DOS (C:) (/dev/hda1)
Partion 2 Linux boot sector before 1024 cylinder (/dev/hda5)
(with new lilo there is no this limitation)
Partion 3 WFW (D:) (/dev/hda6)

All what you need to do in Linux to mount DOS (Windows95/98 FAT32)
1. create mount point for DOS partion (name can be any - WINOWS)
    root# mkdir /mnt/DOS
2. mount DOS partion
    root# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/DOS
3. use DOS partion
    cp ... ....
     rm ... ...
4. unmount partion
    umount /mnt/DOS

Config two: you can put partitions in any order but you have to use 'System
commander' or similar software to boot OS. Use same commands as before with
changing partition names according your sheme, only put lilo boot sector on same
partiotion where you keep linux (not requered but a good step).

If your disk UltraDMA66 or UltraDMA100 you have to use patch for kernel 2.2 or use
kernel 2.3/2.4.
After patch you can improve performance of the disk (not works in some cases) by
using hdparm command. Basic command looks like

1. Check performance
    hdrarm -Tt /dev/hda
2. Switch DMA, read 8 sectors at once, 32 bit access, and keep setting on error
    hdparm -c 1 -d 1 -m 8 -k 1 /dev/hda
3. Check performance agin
    hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

if system works stable after switching to UltraDMA mode put thic command into
startup script
/etc/rc.local or similar (you can make separate script in /etc/rc.d/init.d to start
or stop UltraDMA mode)

Good luck

Andrey

Ok, no amazing results so far....except a lot of wasted time!!

I booted from a boot disk (Tom's root 'n' boot), mounted hda1 as mnt
(mount /dev/hda1 /mnt), went to /mnt/dev and created the carachter
device (mknod /mnt/dev/console c 4 0). I think set the permissions to
666 (chown 666 console). That has the permissions right and the
ownership right (root) but the group is also root and the group is
supposed to be (I think) 5 (which makes no sense to me). So, I edited
my /etc/group and created a group 5 and then made console owned by the
group 5 (chgrp 5 console). ....one minor problem....it still doesn't
work.

I also tried booting from an emergency floppy and that doesn't work
either.

I also tried booting from my boot.img floppy and doing a selective
install...just the dev*. Well, that didn't work either 'cuz it says
that /dev/hda1 is not a root partition.

My next shot - I'm gonna try to upgrade to 6.1.....wish me luck!!

You need to open up your linuxconf, which is located under the
Administration menu...

Sounds like you need to put in your DNS numbers from MSN into the
NAMESERVERS field.

I set my pppd up the other night, and I can connect no problem. I would like
to include, that I am very new to Linux....I've only been using it for a
week. I have Redhat 5.2, and I just ordered 6.2

Good luck!
David

There's been a one-liner patch presented on the linux-kernel mailing list
(see http://kernelnotes.org/lnxlists/linux-kernel/lk_0007_02/ for this
week's archives), or you can (now) try the test4-pre1 patch (which may not
work for other reasons ...).
