Gary,

> username!!!!
You've been baptized again, and didn't even know it! You are now known
as "root", and that's the way you must login initially. Once logged in,
you should create a regular user-type account and login that way unless
there is a compelling motivation to login as root, such as to perform
system admin/maintenance, etc.
Next, without knowing the partition structure of the drive, it's not
easy to give absolute, precise advice, but generally speaking, you can
boot the linux, use linux fdisk to create a new partition for the 'doz,
and then install 'doz. When you create partitions in linux fdisk, you
can create dozens of partition types, but you'll want to create a
partition, then use the fdisk option to "rename or reidentify the
partition type. If you'll want to be able to use long file names in
'doz, you'll probably want the fat32 type partition. For 'doz to be
able to boot it, it must be a primary partition.
You must remember that during a 'doz install, it will overwrite the
master boot record as part of the installation. This means that before
installing 'doz, make a boot diskette for the Linux, and be prepared for
entering linux that way, at least until you can run the lilo again.
Additionally, before installing 'doz, determine the way you'll prefer to
boot linux. You can boot using lilo, or a boot diskette, or using a OS
loader, like loadlin. This will determine how you will boot into linux
after the 'doz install. It's much easier to familiarize yourself with
all of these options BEFORE installing something else which will "break"
the way you currently boot linux.
I recommend using LiLo, AND loadlin, AND a boot diskette. It's prudent,
in my considered opinion, to initially configure all three ways to boot
linux, and then use which ever is appropriate for what you are doing
each time you wish to boot.
The reason you should think about these options is that depending upon
which way you decide to boot linux, you may not need to rerun lilo, or
dos fdisk /mbr, or others to rectify what will happen when 'doz
installs.
Regards,
Valentin Guillen

Subject: Linux on Compaq Presario 1600XL141 (X Problem)
Date: 14 Jul 2000 22:13:45 GMT
Hi,
I've just installed RedHat 6.2 (Xfree 3.3.6) on a Compaq Presario 1600 =
XL141 (french reference) laptop and I can't get the X server to work.
(This laptop is not referenced on =
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ and I can't find a =
laptop with the same graphical specifications)
The graphic card is indicated by Windows98SE as a "Trident CyberBlade i1 =
AGP (51)", it use 8Mb of the central memory (this amount can be =
configured in the bios).=20
The monitor is 12.1" TFT with a vertical frequency of 60Hz (it is =
configured at 800*600*16 in W98SE)
The Trident CyberBlade (generic) is supported by Xfree 3.3.6, I've read =
reports of Trident CyberBlade i7 working under Xfree 3.3.6 but I've not =
yet seen any information on the CyberBlade i1.
I don't if it comes from the monitor or from the graphic card.
In XF86Setup, if I choose :
Card->Detailed Setup : VGA16
Monitor : Extended SVGA, Hz=3D31.5-37.5 Vert=3D60Hz
Mode Selection 640*480*8 (or 640*480*16)
I've got the message : "Congratulations, you've got a running server" =
and asking if I want to use xvidtune (No) and to save XF86Config (Yes).=20
But when I run xinit, I get a "fatal server error" (see a copy of the =
output a the end of this message).
If I choose something else (VGA16*800*600*8 or SVGA*640*480*8 or a =
specific driver (CyberBlade, ...)), I don't get the "congratulations..." =
but "X11.. can't connect..." and after it aks if I want to try again but =
if I answer "ok" I can wait for hours (it seems blocked) and I have to =
do a "ctrl-alt-bckspc".
How can I know if it comes from the monitor or from the graphic card ?
Will installing Xfree 4.0.1 solve the problem ?
=20
I would be very very pleased if someone could help me...
Thanks in advance.
Boris.

Subject: Kernel panic: aic7xxx: unrecoverable BRKADRINT...
Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 16:18:15 -0600
Hello,
I'm trying to install RedHat 6.1 on my Dell XPS-T450 computer. This machine
has an older Adaptec AHA-2940 PCI SCSI host adapter in it. Everything works
fine until the aic7xxx module loads. At that point, the following messages
are displayed and the system hangs. Been through all of the various setting
in the CMOS and so forth but I don't see any problems. Here are the
details:
SCSI adapter BIOS version message at boot time:
Adaptec AHA-2940 BIOS v1.11S
Boot messages:
Everything looks normal up to here...
Loading aic7xxx module
(scsi0) <Adaptec AHA-294X SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 15/0
(scsi0) Narrow Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs
scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.20/3.2.4
<Adaptec AHA-294X SCSI host adapter>
scsi : 1 host.
(scsi0) BRKADRINT error(0x48)
Sequencer Ram Parity Error
PCI Error detected
(scsi0) SEQADDR=0x17
Kernel panic: aic7xxx: unrecoverable BRKADRINT.
In interrupt handler - not syncing
At this point, the system is hung. I've also seen the BRKADRINT error(0x8).
I think that is just the sequencer RAM parity error and no the PCI error.
This host adapter functions correctly under Windows 98SE so I don't think
that I believe that there is a hardware problem with the card or the basic
setup of the system.
Here's some vital statistics on the machine and OS:
RedHat 6.1 boxed CD (kernel 2.2.12-20)
Dell Dimension XPS-T450, BIOS version A04 (PhoenixBIOS 4.0 release 6.0).
Intel Pentium III 450 MHz.
128 MB SDRAM.
Diamond Viper 770D 16MB.
12 GB IDE disk, 40 CD-ROM, HP CDWriter 8100.
D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Ethernet controller.
Yamaha DS-XG PCI sound card.
ISA serial port board - 2 16550A UARTs, no parallel port.
3Com/USR PCI winmodem (I'm not expecting to use this under Linux but I
do use it under Windows for now so I haven't pulled the card).
The additional serial ports are at 0x2F8/irq3 and 0x2E8/irq5.
I've been digging around on the net but I haven't been able to find anything
very helpful. Any help or advise would be greatly apperciated.
Thanks in advance and best regards to all,
Robert Banfill ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Subject: partitions are not visible
Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2000 00:24:09 +0200
Hello,
I have just installed RedHat 6.2 on my computer and encountered the
following problem:
There are two harddisks installed in my computer:
The primary master is 3.2 Gb and dedicated to Windows.
The secondary master is 20.4 Gb and contains the necessary linux partitions
and three partitions using the fat filesystem.
When linux boots the only partitions that are detected are the Primary
master and the linux partitions. The other partitions simply are not
visible.
Can these partitions be made visible to linux, and if so, how is this done?
Thanks in advance

Believe it or not - this worked. I reseated the memory modules in the
machine (after removing them) - bloody compiled first time.!!!!!

From: Kelli Halliburton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help so far.
I tried changing out the serial mouse for a PS/2 mouse, and
hooking the modem to the 9-pin port that the serial mouse had
been hooked to.
Unfortunately, I got the same problem. The modem only responds
with the TR light. Never any activity on the SD or RD lights. If
I try to connect to the modem at 112k, I occasionally get the TM
light to come on, and that's also when I receive the
spurious "CONNECT 28800" messages.
I don't even know what TM stands for. I assume the modem works
correctly, because until just a few weeks ago, I was using it
with my Amiga. I also must now assume that the serial port works
correctly, because it is the same port that worked just fine
when the serial mouse was hooked to it.
Through process of elimination, I believe that the problem lies
with Kppp. David Efflandt mentioned that he was unable to get it
working with his Mandrake distro. I was unable to find any
information regarding "minicom" on my system. I would like to
know what are the names of any other ppp dialout utilities that
would be included in a Debian (Storm - "Rain" release) distro.

Depends on how your network is set up. If your ISP gives you a pop
mailbox through which you receive your mail, you will need to
install/setup fetchmail or some other program that will get your mail and
put it in your mail box. Most mail clients (like kmail, netscape) will
talk directly to pop servers and will save you this step.

Hmm.. what causes something to show up in cat /proc/pci?
I installed that file that has the Lucent names for PCI a while back
(long enough ago that I can't recall the name or where) so I'd expect
something to show up. Butr I can't work out if any of these are a
modem or not.
If it doesn't show up here, I presume that means it's not being seen
at all by the Linux PCI handlers?

16Mb on a slow machine will be torture with Gnome. To run that
comfortably you will at least 32Mb, 64 would be better. On small machines
I have had good experiences with the blackbox window manager. It can run
on very small (8Mb) boxes. It has very few features, but it is very small
