Hi, all.

I'm running Red Hat 6.1, and up until a week ago, our CVS service, which
uses rsh, was working fine. I'm not quite sure why, but Monday this week
the pam_rhosts_auth failed continuously except for the user "admin".
Needless to say, I've spent this week reading up on, and checking my PAM
settings, as well as anything obvious (checked ownership and permissions
of .rhosts files, nothing changed in the /etc/pam.d/ directory, changed
all entries in the .rhosts files to IP based, used the shadow utilities
pwck and grpck to check the user/pw database, etc.). The following was my
original /etc/pam.d/rsh:

#%PAM-1.0
auth required /lib/security/pam_rhosts_auth.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
session required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

After running in promiscuous mode for a while (I know, not good), I found
out the following setup works:

#%PAM-1.0
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rhosts_auth.so
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
session required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

I only got to know PAM in detail this week, and although I read up a fair
bit, I'm still a beginner, and very curious what the heck happened.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

It should be detected by the kernel at boot time.

I don't see it in there. When I get home, I'll try and post my output.
In the meantime, maybe physically switching the modem to another PCI
slot will help.

Try the command "mt -f /dev/nht0 reten". If you have ide support, that
should cause the tape drive to retension the tape. If that works, the
command "tar -cfzM /dev/nht0 /which-ever-files/to-backup should write
/which-ever-files/to-backup to the tape in gzip format. /dev/nht0 is for a
non-rewinding device, /dev/ht0 is for a rewinding device.

You should try the fbuilder products from InnerTek Software
(www.innertek.com). They have a free product called fBuilder Lite that
does a great job of creating your firewall and if you want more control
they have a pay version called 'Plus'. You should check it out and good
luck!

I've just installed Gentus Linux 6.2 last night (I'm a total Linux newbie).
There's no sound at all. According to the friend that helped me install, my
sound card isn't supported by this distribution. It's a Soundblaster Live!

find drivers for this card, or ideas on how to get around this problem?
Thanks in advance

Nathaniel:

I just got my Intellimouse wheel to work, and I have a Dell, too (XPS
R400). Is your current mouse the PS/2 mouse? I was a bit confused by the
message whether you were using the serial mouse or the PS/2 right now. I'm
using Mandrake 7.0.

Here's what I did:

As root, edit your XF86Config Pointer section as follows:

Change Protocol to "IMPS/2"
Add these lines after that:
ZAxisMapping 4 5
Buttons 5

Make sure you add "Buttons 5" because it wouldn't work until I did that.

Also, near the end of the Pointer section, put a # mark beside
Emulate3Buttons and Emulate3Timeout and ChordMiddle.

This is the exact entry from my config file:

Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2" (it was "PS/2" before)
    Device "/dev/mouse"
    ZAxisMapping 4 5
    Buttons 5
<snip>

Good luck!

Sincerely,
PixelDust

James,

1. It depends on what type of Intellimouse you have. If you have the
PS/2 with the wheel, use Protocol "IMPS/2"
2. On my system, when I set up Linux, it set my mouse device to be
/dev/mouse. I'm not sure what yours would be - I'm a newbie.
3. For an Intellimouse with the scroll wheel, add these lines beneath the
Device line in the Pointer section:
    ZAxisMapping 4 5
    Buttons 5
4. No - comment out Emulate3Buttons with a # mark. I also commented out
Emulate3Timeout and ChordMiddle.
5. I didn't have a baud rate, resolution, or sample rate listed on mine,
and it works fine.
6. Comment out the Emulate3Timeout.

This built me a tight ipchain firewall rule set
   http://linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/firewall/index.html
I used DENY, hardcoded external addresses, logged everything.

As part of the instruction and if you read the script, it will
give several suggestions as to where you install the firewall
and turn on IP Masquerading.

If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces.
Practice safe computing. Backup the file before you change it.

My CD-ROM is bootable. I thought I can boot (in fact, that have the 'boot:"

what's the command to create one more boot disk (1.44m)?

I am still working to solve this problem. I have found quite a number of other
people on other NG's with the same problem.

I can't believe its not an FAQ on RH's site... there is no mention of it
whatsoever.

Jesus says that there should be two links. I _do_ have a /usr/include/bits
directory, but this might just be the other way around. I tried to create a few
links, but I think they were wrong... because it still failed.

I did find this (from linux.sources.kernel): (he's wrong about the README
though -- it isn't there and he admits that later in the post)

<<You didn't read the README at the top level of /usr/src/linux-2.2.16, did you?

Every kernel tree I have seen had an explicit intruction to create a few
symbolic
links from /usr/include to inside the source tree, and one of them is

ln -sf /usr/src/linux/include/linux /usr/include/linux

Anyway, that's your solution. By the way, RedHat's way of putting the kernel is
not really too widely adopted - the conventional practice is to put the kernel
tree at /usr/src/linux ; in any case, /usr/src/linux should be either the real
location or a symbolic link to the actual location (in your case,
/usr/src/linux-2.2.16). Your problem might very possibly be cured (and probably
recommendably so) by "ln -sf /usr/src/linux-2.2.16 /usr/src/linux" , as that's
where most compilation expect where the kernel is.>>

I don't think this is right though.

Anyone got more ideas help??

Cheers,
John
