It's complaining that your modules.conf has changed and you should refresh
the dependency information for the kernel modules.

Joel, your problem is that netscape is trying to resolve the host name
of your host by using the DNS servers that you specified. The trick is
to tell it to use the DNS only if it doesn't find anything in the
/etc/hosts. You can do that by setting the "hosts" entry in
/etc/nsswitch.conf to "files dns".

Subject: Re: Red Hat 7.1 and "Tripple" Boot
Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 09:35:16 -0500
I run 98SE, Win2K and Mandrake. I made a small boot partition for win98se
and win2k on one drive, and installed mandrake on a second drive. I made
/boot, /, /pub and swap partitions for mandrake. When I installed LILO, it
recognized the windows boot partition, and I made it the default, I also
installed LILO to the master boot record on hda (primary hard drive). When
I boot up, LILO comes up and I can choose windows or linux. If I choose
windows, the NT boot loader comes up and I choose either 2K or 98SE.
Hope this helps

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have a SuSE7.1 system with kernel 2.4.4 that runs fine. However, I have to
start samba manually each time I reboot (not very often). The start script
is in /etc/init.d/smb, and there is a symlink to it in
/etc/init.d/rc3.d/S10smb. Even when I call the symlink manually, nothing
happens. If I call the smb script directly, samba works without other
problems. What might be wrong ? Other entries in the same runlevel have the
same structure and work too.

As you have SuSE 7.1, you've got KDE2.01. If you like it, you have all the
apps you need (kmail, knode, konqueror). The upgrades to KDE 2.1.1 are
available at http://www.kde.org/. As for the firewall, install the iptables
package and try rc.firewall from http://mirkk.kurd.nu/~monmotha/firewall
(the site is down sometimes, try again)

Simplifying a previously complicated posting, can someone please tell me why
the following messages have appeared during an install of linux to the
second hard drive (this message appears only after the all the files are
copied - 99% to completion of install):
Warning: /dev/hdb1 is not on the first disk.
Warning: device 0X0302 exceeds 1024 cylinder limit.
Fatal: geo_comp_addr cylinder number is too big 2028>1023
Note: during install Lilo was selected to install on hdb1 not in MBR.
I do not want Lilo to overwrite my 3rd party boot loader in MBR.
hda1, hda2 contain Win OSes.
I have seen countless postings that make mention about lilo overcoming the
"1st hard disk limitation" and "1024 cylinder limit". But does this apply to
deployment on 2nd physical HDD ??
Can someone confirm that this is indeed one of redhat's limitation (i.e for
2nd HDD) ?? ...so that I can stop my 12th attempt of installing linux ! As
with Anthony Cook's posting, all How To's seem only to refer to installing
on other partitions, not separate HDD.
Thanks all.

hello,
our box had rh7.0 on it. my buddy used dos diskettes to book the computer
and format the drive. Linux will not boot up now. we tried booting with both
Linux and dos boot\installation disks. our goal is to remove Linux and do a
fresh install.
the cd drive kicks the cd out all the time. it continuously says that Linux
is not found on the cd and ejects the cd.
thank you,

you should try making a boot partition on that drive separate from / and
everyhting else. 20 MB should be sufficient...
/boot /dev/hbb1 20 MB
/ /dev/hdb6 Everything except swap and boot
swap /dev/hdb5 whatever suits you

Boot on a windows system disk, use fdisk to remove/format partitions and do
"fdisk /mbr" to remove lilo.

I personally don't like KDE or it's internet app's.
I choose to use Gnome and the following programs:
Web browser: Opera 5.0b8 http://www.opera.com
Mail client: Spruce 0.7.5 ? sorry, can't remember!
News client: Pan 0.9.6 http://pan.rebelbase.com
I can highly recommend each of these programs, they are FAST and
reliable.
Until recently, I was using Balsa 1.1.4 as my mail reader.
I hope this helps.

Subject: mkisofs doesn't like fat32 partitions
Date: Thu, 03 May 2001 17:06:02 GMT
Hi,
I'm trying to make an iso image of a directory, which is located on a
fat32 partition (to share data whith windoze too), mounted in my
filesystem with u+g read and write permission, but mkisofs fails to
make such an image with this output:
bash$ mkisofs -D -gui -hide-joliet-trans-tbl -l -J -L -m core -o
/var/tmp/image -r -V rk-03.05.01 -v /mnt/documenti/Riccardo/Listini
Using ".mkisofsrc"
mkisofs 1.12 (i686-pc-linux-gnu)
Scanning /mnt/documenti/Riccardo/Listini
[cut]
mkisofs: Successo. cannot read from
/mnt/documenti/Riccardo/Listini/Centro_HL/24.4.html
It doesn't change anything using the -a option or being root when issuing
the command.
Then I've tried copying that source directory in my home directory, which
is located on an ext2 partition, and this time everything works fine.
I'd like mkisofs to read data directly from the fat32 partition, I can't
copy hundreds of MB before making an iso image.
Could anyone help me?
Thank you.

Okay this is where I stand... Debian Potato... (2.2.18)
I am currently just testing using a crossover cable and one WIN98SE machine.
I now can connect to my Win98SE machine if I use a static IP.
But I want to be able to force all of these settings with the exception of
HOST Name
(eg. WIN98) through DHCP requests from other machines within the home
network.
I also want to be able to use Samba and have windows shares on my Linux box.
My Windows 98 Machine cannot currently get on the internet through the Linux
box.
(Open up Mozilla and get a web page or get email or use ICQ or IRC or
Telnet)
I can ping... and resolve the name to an address, but it times out on all
ping requests (except ping 192.168.1.1)
On the Windows machine, I can only get ping, FTP, Telnet and WWW from the
machine 192.168.1.1
On the Linux machine I can do everything... surf the net, irc, and telnet. I
can make hits to both the internet
as well as my home network.
I am getting very frustrated. I know I am very close... but yet... so very
far away.
If I am missing anything... which I hope I am not... just tell me and I will
post it right away.
