As others have mentioned, there are bash constructs to do the '`pwd`'
part. I just don't like the way they do it.

The previous advise I got was, " That message means tht the
far end is sending you ascii characters ( eg a login prompt) almost
always."

This is the command line which makes pppd stop saying "serial line not 8
bit clean" (the one on the web-page and everithing which doesn't
"eat" all the ascii text which the server sends doesn't).
Doesn't the log-file show that the other end asks straight for login and
password?

Hmmm! try a "rpm -qf /usr/sbin/crond
And also   "rpm -q crontab"

If either of them do not show being installed you may need to install
it.

Or if both are installed then possibly try an

 "rpm -e --nodeps crontabs vixie-cron"

and then reinstall both of them again.

Edit your "/home/user/.Xdefaults" and add this line to the end of the
file.

    Netscape*documentFonts.sizeIncrement: 5

    Then in the Netscape menu choose:

    "edit/preferences/appearance/fonts"

and set the browser to:

    Use my default fonts, overriding document-specified fonts

    Be sure to choose the font you wish to use before saving changes.

After making the changes shown above, close and restart Netscape.
You DO NOT need to reboot your system. This is linux.

This is linux you can change anything you like.

Edit  /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0

Change the line at the bottom to point to the file you wish to use.

/usr/share/pixmaps/redhat/graphic.you.want.png

Edit the /etc/bashrc file and Comment out the "PS1=" line and directly
below it places these lines. This will make the root prompt red and the
user prompt yellow

    if [ `id -un` = root ]; then
        PS1='\[\033[1;31m\]\h:\w\$\[\033[0m\] '
    else
        PS1='\[\033[1;33m\]\h:\w\$\[\033[0m\] '

By reading the install notes as found in INSTALL, where it says:
...
USING PHP 3 AND PHP 4 AS CONCURRENT APACHE MODULES

   Recent operating systems provide the ability to perform versioning and
   scoping. This features make it possible to let PHP 3 and PHP 4 run as
   concurrent modules in one Apache server.

   This feature is known to work on the following platforms:

   - Linux with recent binutils (binutils 2.9.1.0.25 tested)
   - Solaris 2.5 or better
   - FreeBSD (3.2, 4.0 tested)

   To enable it, configure PHP 3 and PHP 4 to use APXS (--with-apxs) and the
   necessary link extensions (--enable-versioning). Otherwise, all standard
   installations instructions apply. For example:

                $ ./configure \
                                --with-apxs=/apache/bin/apxs \
                                --enable-versioning \
                                --with-mysql \
                                --enable-track-vars

   If this also works on your platform or if you know a way to do it, please
   report it to our bug database at http://bugs.php.net

In other words, do not use RPM's but compile it yourself.

Hi,

I am using xsm. After I login, the pop-up window that asks what session I
want to start is too big. I can't even read words on the far right or
left. But once I select and start a session, the diplay goes back to the
right size.

Also - I'll adjust my screen size on my monitor during a session, but once
I logout, all the settings are lost and I need to adjust them on my
monitor once again.

Any ideas?

Other than those problems it works great.

Thanks,

This is a problem with RH6.2 installation. Somewhere in the config
file is:

<DIRECTORY ~>
...
...
</DICRECTORY>

where it should be

<DIRECTORY ~.ht>
...
...
</DICRECTORY>

Disclaimer: I'm just a newbie and I don't have the config file in
front of me so this is all from memory.

Basically what I think is the intention is that no one from the
outside world can edit .htaccess files but the mistake from Redhat in
effect locked all files.

Subject: Installation Error -- signal 11
Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 08:58:05 GMT

"exited abnormally -- received signal 11"

I have been trying to install Redhat6.2 from a release CDRom onto my old 486
for two days... I continually get this error at different times during the
installation process. Usually when the install is copying to the Hard
Drive.

I do have LBA enabled from Bias, and I know that the partitions are not too
big for my ancient Bios to recognize...

I took the harddrive out of the 486 at one point and used my p3 to install
Linux onto it. No problem, worked like a charm the first time... so I know
the problem isn't with my CD or the hard drive... The problem was that when
I plunked the HD back into the 486 expecting the installation to be
finished, the kernel "Panicked" because it had been compiled for a Pentium+
machine... and I don't have the expertise to know how to get around that...

My best guess now is that I have some faulty hardware in the 486, but this
is odd because everything was running fine (albeit slowly) under win98.
This is the only scenario that accounts for the randomness of the
failures... well... in my limited knowledge of this os.

If someone could shed some light on what a "signal 11" is, or perhaps point
me to a website that has a list of error signals that would be fantastic...

OR if someone could tell me how to change my kernel so that it is not
optimized for a Pentium+ when compiled on my Pentium+ machine, that would be
almost as good (assuming there are no other problems with doing that which I
haven't foreseen).

Thanks in advance... if I can provide any more information in any area,
please just ask :)
