you said telnet, does it work on local terminal? if so, try reinstalling
telnetd or install sshd.

try to create an unpasswored user and see what happens. Edit /etc/passwd
and add something like:

username::9999:99:description:/home/username:/bin/bash

also actualizing the kernel is not a bad idea ;). if unsure of current
version
use file <kernel path>.

Hi,

Is it possible to get both mice (USB and PS/2) run simultaneously?
Does anyone know how to do it?

Thanks.

If ps -ax shows sendmail receiving on port 25 (showing its running),
make sure that network service is running.

Recently did something similar when my venerable 486-based Linux machine
died on me. I bought a surplus COTS box and put two of the old machine's
IDE drives on the second channel of the new machine. Worked like a
dream. Slight difference in that I did this with disks used under Red
Hat 5.1 and now accessed under RH6.2.

Don't know about that as I don't use the original disks for booting.
Certainly Rh6.2 noticed that the disks were there and coped with them.

Hi,
Why can't I ping localhost?

I have a dynamic dialup connection to my school's isp.

Here's what is happening. BTW I can't change the netmask for the
loopback interface to what should be: ifconfig lo netmask 255.0.0.0.
See error below. Is that the problem?

Any help is appreciated! Please email me since I don't get on these

Subject: Kernels + libretto 50ct != happy

I just installed redhat 7 on my libretto 50ct. I've been using redhat
(inculing redhat7) for years now have had no problems with it. but the
last few weeks have been hell trying to configure a new kernel for the
libretto. I would like to install a thinner kernel, and add support for
lirc and the toshiba SMM driver.

Redhat 7 "issues"

- the "chips" Xfree 4.0.1 driver included has a bug which casues it to
dump core when you start X. this seems to still be in the recent
rawhide builds as well.

- the kernel headers included are based on 2.4.x while the kernel is
2.2.x. When you try and compile add on modules for the kernel, they
build against these headers and thus have unresolved symbols and kernel
number mismatches.

- the 2.2.16-22? kernel source included with rh7 won't build, period. I
have tested it on several machines, both in the standard config as
shipped and with custom configs. The only way to get it to build is to
compile in SMP support, which of course disables APM.

- the pcmcia source included with rh7 does not build against any other
kernel sources, and the pcmcia source from the official site does not
seem to be compatible with the card services installed with rh7.
Installing that over the rh7 install seems to break pcmcia
functionality, and for the life of me I haven't been able to get it to
function.

So here's the deal:

I downloaded the official 2.2.17 kernel, but it seems to have errors in
Checksum.S and won't compile. the official 2.2.16 compiles ok, but I
can't get card services to function properly with it. the redhat 2.2
kernel source just plain won't compile.

2.4.0test11 compiles, but right after it starts to boot (somewhere after
the IDE controller is detected), I believe it attempts to load some
modules, the console fills with error messages about /sbin/modprobe
failing to execute and then something about binfmt=646c, I can't
remember the exact message.

I figured it may be an issue with modutils, so I updated to 2.3.21, that
didn't help.
I've checked all the version numbers in the Documentation/Changes, and
all my stuff it up to date.

Does anyone have any suggestions or information? They would be much
appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

That's basically not true. On most linux based systems, there are a
lot of binaries in the traditional root fs (i.e. in /bin and /sbin)
that are heavily used, not only on bootup. If they are chached or not
is just a question of what you "do" with your machine.

> Oh .. you are saying that you are striping /usr? Not /? Yes, striping

No, I stripe "/". This of course includes /usr (and /home and ....).

> /usr has advantages. But you lose heavily in robustness by striping

Well sort of. However, my raid arrays until now NEVER failed on
me. Secondly, I have a recovery plan that does not at all depend on a
traditional small functioning root fs.

> /! And you only gain in speed if you stripe over two controllers.

According to the raid documents, you are likely to gain speed as soon
as you have two partitions on two different hds. Different controllers
are the of course real thing, though ;).

Yes -- I did not mean "resizing". It`s just that I run out of space
when I really don't have no more space -- not if just one fixed size
partition is full.

Resizing, btw, afaik IS (or will be) possible with the new style
raidtools, and it should be made easy using "lvm". I have not tried
that, though.

 So now, all questions striped!

Hello,

I not sure about the proper module for your card. The following is an
example using the fdomain scsi module. This is added to /etc/modules.conf

alias scsi_hostadapter fdomain
options fdomain io=0xca00 irq=11

Can't help you with your question about your HP tape drive, but I would
assume that if the compression is built-in the hardware it would work
automatically.

If you did not get it set up in the install you can recompile the kernel,
the options for this is in old CDROM drives in make xconfig.

Follow the README meticulously and you shouldn't have trouble. Miss an
important step and you'll likely be reinstalling.
