cd into the RealPlayer8 directory (/usr/local/RealPlayer8). Then execute
the mimeinstall.sh and pluginstall.sh scripts both as root and as user.
Kill then restart netscape and your file associations will be fixed.

Slackware doesn't start up like RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, et al. In
/etc/rc.d/rc.local insert the following
modprobe es1371
and any other modules which Slack is not installing. There are a bunch of
other modules which Slack does install and which you don't need. To stop
some things from starting on boot take the executable bit away from the
files. chmod -x XXXXX.rc. And there are others which you can find with
grep.
When you build your kernel, use the following
# make clean
# make dep
# make bzImage
# make modules
# make modules_install
# cp System.map /boot/System.map
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz
Now edit /etc/lilo.conf and in the part for image=/vmlinuz, change
label=linux to label=old. Then add the following
image=/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/hdX where X refers to the partition where / is
label=linux
read-only
Now execute /sbin/lilo and when you reboot, your new kernel will come up.

Make sure that the large chip on your soundcard says ens1371 or ens1373 on
it. Creative has been playing games with what they call a Soundblaster 16

roadrunner uses dhcp. you need to modify the ethernet adapter for dhcp and
this should fix the problem. sometimes there is also a modem error with the
motorola modems that were originally supplied by the cable companies. the
newer toshiba modems work better. still, be sure you're running dhcp on the
ethernet adapter.
also, you must not connect the modem via a hub. it must be connected
DIRECTLY to your nic.
furthermore, why buy more ethernet addresses? put a second nic in your
machine and use ip masquerade. set up a hub on the second nic and make the
ip address on the second nic the default gateway for the lan. make the rr
nic the default gateway for your linux box. you can run a zillion computers
on the lan side through the linux box. note that this violates the
acceptable use policy.
i implement this (with the knowlege of rr) to use the ipchains firewall. my
company provides 7/24 customer service and i have an isdn link to my NOC. i
use the linux box as a firewall for the home lan while enjoying high-speed
access for the windows workstation when i'm surfing.

Date: Sun, 6 May 2001 16:00:31 +0200
Good day
I am trying to install Linux on a system which has windows 98 second edition
already on it as a second operating system.
It has a 10 Gb hard disk which has been partitioned as follows:
c:\ 1 Gb FAT 32
d:\ 8 Gb FAT 32
Linux unformatted:\ 1 gb
When I try to install Linux on the 1 Gb I set asside for it, it does not
want to, saying that the boot partition is too big.
What can I do?
Please help.

That's strange, I have 28 of them. From XF86Config (not RH factory style)
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
The x fontserver produces some really fuzzy fonts, so I turn it off and
catalog the fonts in XF86Config.

O.K. - so I've searched several archives, hit a few books (including
'Linux
Firewalls' and gone through the various HOWTO's. Nobody really
discusses
what I'm trying to do, and it seams like it should be a common thing.
Here's the scoop:
I'm trying to setup a bastian firewall that masquerades my LAN, but
still gives access to a web server. The LAN only consists of 3
windoze boxes which need to be masq'd and the web server needs to
keep the PUBLIC IP address. -Setup looks somethin' like this:
__________
| Masq'd IP's |
/--------------
_______ ________ _____/
INTERNET---| DSL rtr |---| Firewall |------| Hub |
--------- ---------- ------\
\__________
| Webserver |
===========
The concept seams easy enough but I have a few Questions
1) Do I need a third NIC on the firewall to segregate the web server
and take it off the hub?
or,
2) Can I just take care of it by forwarding packets destined to the
public IP address while still masquerading packets from the LAN?
-How do I set up the ipchains? (yes, still on the 2.2.16 kernel)
3) I'm having a hard time conceptualizing the gateways. Do I need to
set the gateway for the LAN and web server to point to eth1
(internal)
and then set the eth1 gateway to point to eth0 (external) ??
Any help would sure be appreciated. (and please don't tell me what a
dumbass I am for not knowing this stuff, I'm still a bit of a newbie,
but
I AM trying to do my homework first. ;-)
Thanks!
~ Trevor ~
-Oh! One other thing - if I ?route add? a default gateway on the
firewall to point to the DSL gateway (designated by the phone co.) -
takes almost 5 minutes to return the full kernel routing table. -Why
the major delay? ...hmmmm... curious :-p

Subject: growable disk partitions
Date: 06 May 2001 09:06:11 -0700
Hello,
I have a 20GB hard disk on my computer. I have installed Redhat 7.0 on
it. During the installation, I had used 'disk druid' to create
partitions. The following is the partition table of my disk.
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 17 136521 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 18 2480 19784047+ 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 18 801 6297448+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 802 1324 4200966 83 Linux
/dev/hda7 1325 1357 265041 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda8 1358 1374 136521 83 Linux
/dev/hda9 1375 1391 136521 83 Linux
/dev/hda10 1392 1400 72261 83 Linux
At the time of installation, I had opted for /dev/hda5 to be
growable. This explains a large /dev/hda2 primary partition on my
disk.
Now, I'd like to create another primary partition out of the unused
space on my disk. I need this to install FreeBSD. Unfortunately,
/dev/hda2 won't let me do so.
Can somebody suggest a way to reclaim the unused space to allow
creation of a new primary partition?
thanks,
Rohit Grover.

If you consider an operating system which uses 90% of your hard drive to be
a 'second' operating system......
Use Partition Magic and shrink your d:\ to 5-6 GB. You are not going to
get much of a taste of Linux if you try to install it in only 1 GB.

That is NOT what you normally do with usbdevfs.
Start with http://www.linux-usb.org/ follow the various links, read the
faq about "Why doesn't /proc/bus/usb exist?", and see

maybe with a shell script that has a sleep at the end, like
fortune
sleep 600
or try (I haven't)
xterm -e '(fortune ; sleep 600 )'
that's single quotes so the paren's and commands get to xterm to execute.

The other responder did not answe your question in a way to solve the
problem so i'll do it.
LILO needs to have a /boot partition under the 1024th cylinder, this
translates to about 8 gigs. If you don't do this LILO can't boot your
kernel images. The eror message you are getting isn't very helpful b/c
even if you make the partition 1 cylinder in size and make it beyond 1024
cylinders you still get the 'boot partition too big' message when it
isn't the size of it, its the location that is hte problem.
You will need to make the /boot partition closer to the beginning of the
drive or install linux, download a newer verison of LILO, boot with a
rescule disk for linux, and install the new LILO. Versions beyond 21.3 i
believe can access kernel images anywhere on a drive.
By the way, i've answered this sort of problem 3 times in 2 days. Try
doing searches next time instead of posting an often posted question.

Hmmm. You may have missed the point. I think those scripts
did run. The associations appear to be there, in netscape.
I'm just wondering why the auto-configure feature can't
find a server, and the only whay to get it to work
is to setup real player to use only HTTP protocol.
I figured it should work on install, and I shouldn't
have to mess with the preferences.
