Subject: redhat 6.2 install problem with 10.2 GB hdd
Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 22:00:41 GMT
i have a 10.2 GB seagate hdd with win98 2nd edition installed on a primary 4
GB FAT32 partition. i also have a 2.4 GB extended DOS partition with a
logical drive occupying the whole of this partition.the remaining space is
unallocated.
while trying to install redhat 6.2 i first created a 15 MB /boot partition.
as windows took up only 6.5 GB i assume this would make the boot partition
within 1024 cylinders(??). next i created a 3047 MB native partition. disk
druid said i had 102 MB left so i created a 1 MB swap partition and set it to
be growable. i got an error message saying the partition is too big. i tried
various sizes of swap with the same error. even a 1 MB non-growable partition
was deemed to be too big.
what could be wrong? my bios is not all that old and shows 1245 cylinders and
not 1024(which i read somewhere is what it would show if it were an old
bios). i tried first creating the boot, then the swap and then the native
partition. same error.while creating the /boot partition i set it to be of
type 'linux native'. is this okay? there was another option for RAID but i
didnt know what that meant..my bios is set to use LBA..if that is relevant.
i hope someone can help me. also i am not really sure what 'extended' and
'logical' drives are. if someone could explain that it would be a big help
too.
thanks
Dhrakol

Thanks for the suggestion. Already tried that by booting with the
floppy install disks and did the upgrade. All that managed to do was
to clobber the Kernel upgrade to 2.2.14-6 that was already installed
never updated the scsi controller information so upon reboot it still
hung.
Wound up having to insert the old SCSI controller, and with advice
from E J in the newsgroup I configured the conf.modules file for the
new controller device, made a mkinitrd, did a lilo -v and held my
breath while I rebooted. Presto up and running again.
P.S. Windoze 98 is on another partition of the drive and it booted up
without a problem when the controller was switched <VBG>.

Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 22:27:02 GMT
I would appreciate any suggestions people can give me on this one.
So far, the story is that my Mandrake Linux installation doesn't
recognise my SCSI card. I have recently discovered what the card is,
it's an Adaptec AVA-1502 ISA card. I have a Ricoh MP6200S.
After various messages in this and the alt.os.linux.mandrake
newsgroups I have got to the following stage:
/etc/conf.modules has:
alias scsi_hostadapter aha152x
options aha152x aha152x=0x140,9,7,1
When booted I get:
scsi: 0 hosts
scsi: detected total.
in /var/log/dmesg, and /proc/scsi has a single file entry (scsi) that
says I have no host adapters.
Now if I:
modprobe scsi_hostadapter
/proc/scsi has a new directory entry called aha152x, and the scsi file
recognises my Ricoh drive. I can then mount and read CDs in it!
So my question is why is the modprobe action not happening
automatically - is that the scsi_hostadapter modprobe thing is run
before conf.modules is processed? Whatever it is, what is the best way
round this?
(PS If the suggestion is "buy an AHA 2940 PCI PNP card" then that may
be a possibility that I would consider!)
Thanking you in anticipation!
Best Regards

First of all, before partitioning for Linux, did you save what's
called the Master Boot Record (MBR)? The MBR stores a record of
the split partitons on your PC, and is read at bootup of the PC,
then it goes to the boot loader if you have a dual OS PC.
Anyway, because this Linux install is fairly new from what you're
telling here, you may want to consider restoring the boot record,
which means Windows will get everything back. After that, do a
scandisk and defrag. Once that's done, you can proceed with
resplitting the Windows partition with whatever partition utility
you use (I recommend FIPS or the ranish partition manager from
www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/). As far as boot managers, I
think LILO or LOADLIN from safe mode DOS is still the best. I've
never heard of this grub thing before. Is this LILO in disguise?
Please post back.

I want to thank you for your patience.
I went back and examined my kernel files.
My problem came from the way I copied
my unpacked files to linux-2.2.14.
Seems I copied each unpacked directory
except for 'net'. I had some good stuff in the
old 'net' directory, so I put off copying the rest
of the new 'net'. (Don't ask me why I did
something so dumb.) So naturally, xconfig
wasn't finding Config.in in the old 'net' directory.
It was still in the new but unmoved 'net' directroy.
Again thank you for your patience (/embarassed).

Actually, I needed to run a few programs of my windows partition so I ended
up fdisk-ing my mbr and running sys to get windows to boot up again. I'm
guessing this means that I've lost at least my bootloader. With my exams
coming up I really do not have the time to spend to play with the partitions
to see what's going on. Hopefully in two weeks after exams I will be able
to.
Grub is the default bootloader for mandrake 7.1. It is definitely different
from lilo, although I'm too new to this to tell you how. Here's the homage.
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/. The main reason I was using it was the
fact that it gets around the 1024 cylinder limit.
So, do you have any suggestions on how I can perhaps recover my Linux
partition? Ranish partition manager sees my Linux partition--so I guess it's
there also, is there some other reason for me to get that VFS error?

Hi,
This will require some work to get Linux running with 2 of
the h/w items in the mix you have there:
1. The ATA66 card is supported in the 2.0 kernel, but not in
2.2.x (IIRC, it went into 2.3.18 and will be in 2.4.x)
2. The Savage 4 chip requires XFree 3.3.6 which comes
with newer distros (ie: RH6.2) only.
You can install RH 6.0 + 2.0 kernel bootdisk+patches from Promise
website, then d/l XFree 3.3.6 and patch that
in. I have a client with a new Micron box and he has both
pieces working, although not real smoothly [yet].
Buying bleeding edge hardware is an exercise in hard-work
for the experienced or just frustration for the newbie.
Cheers,
ed

I just got sound working in Linux (Mandrake 7.0), and I tried the KDE CD
player, Kscd. However, no matter what I do, the display says
"ejected". I changed the CD device from /dev/cd-rom to /dev/hdc in the

the permissions for both /dev/cd-rom and /dev/hdc to a+r, as suggested
in the help file. The CD player works fine in Windows 98.
I'm using KDE 1.1.2. My sound card is a Turtle Beach Montego A3D, using

I wanted to ask here before submitting it as a bug to KDE. Has anyone

I had a similar problem with a SuSE 6.4 install on my Maxtor 40GB HD.
It wouldn't see any of the disk above 1027 cylinder. That's right
1027, not 1024. What I did was as the linuxrc came up and I got the
boot: prompt, I used the values for the disk that were display by the
BIOS when LBA mode was selected. This configuration showed 4982
cylinders, 255 head, and 63 sectors. Basically it looked like this
boot: linux /dev/hdc=4982,255,63
That seemed to do the trick.
Now if I could only get my modem to work! ;)

Same answer. Edit the /etc/inittab and change: ``id:3:initdefault:'' to
``id:3:initdefault:''. To get into a text login in order to log in as
root and do that, when the lilo prompt comes up type ``linux single''.
If you don't have the `prompt' global in /etc/lilo.conf yet, then
use a boot disk to get into inittab. Use Xconfigurator or XF86Setup to
make a new XF86Config file that will hopefully work.
